Discouraged after partial knee replacement 11 days ago

I am so discouraged and concerned . Had partial knee replacement on right knee , lateral ( outside) of knee.Thought I was doing good . Went off pain meds after 4 days. Now back on , trouble sleeping , have terrible pain on the inside of knee . It's like a pulling or something with the ligament . Could something have happened on the other side during surgery . It only hurts when I walk on it . I wouldn't need the cane except for that . Is this all normal . My doctor doesn't send you to PT with partials but I am going to go on my own . I will need to return to work in two weeks which from the beginning my Doctor said after 4 weeks I'd be able to . I'm still so swelled up, never expected it to be like this .

Thanks Debbie!  It is a frustrating, overwhelming and sometimes confusing healing process.  Knowing that you are now feeling better gives me hope.  Continue to be well!

Hi Cheryl - I am 8 weeks post op & was wondering how you are doing? I have read all of the responses in this forum & it is nice to know I am not the only one to feel such dispair & hopelessness. I am 8 weeks post op & the swelling & tightness in my knee is relentless. The Dr. put me on meloxicam, which is suppose to help with swelling (may take up to 2 weeks to take effect) but does nothing for the pain, so he called in another script for me today to take for pain in conjunction with the meloxicam. I HATE taking all of these drugs. I didn't take pain meds after the first 3 days after surgery so it's very disheartening that I need to take them now. I have been doing PT 3X per week since 3 days after surgery, which I am very happy with, as my range of motion in excellent. I still can't do stairs or squats & my quad is like pudding sad I'm really looking for input on others that have been thru this to give me an idea of how much longer I may expect this discomfort to be in the forefront of my every day life. I am sooo depressed -- feeling like I will NEVER go back to my normal, drug free life. Thanks for listening. I hope to hear good things from you -- which means you are doing well smile

      Hi

I am exactly 1 year post op today. Hang in there and persevere with the exercises, you are still early days. I stopped needing all the painkillers after the first month, went back to work after 2 months, after 6 months I had days where I forgot about it, still knew when I'd overdone it. These days 1 year on I can walk 4 miles, cut the grass and stand and cook dinner all in the same day!! It will be worth it in the end.

Happy to hear you are doing well! It's encouraging, but a year seems like such a long way away sad  I feel the same as a couple other people in this group, where I was woefully uniformed about what to expect after surgery & the recovery time. I was told at 12 weeks I would be back to my normal work out schedule & riding my horses -- I hardly think that will happen at this point, as 12 weeks is only 4 weeks away. I am trying to be patient & keep a positive attitude, but sometimes it's very hard when the pain & discomfort it sooo relentless. I wish I could just step away from it for a few minutes & exhale. Anyway -- thank you so much for your reaponse & encouragement -- I will be looking forward to the next couple months when this "phase" of this procedure will  be behind me smile

      Hi

I felt exactly the same as you did and couldn't see a time when I would feel "normal" again, unfortunately you can't rush it, it takes as long as it takes. Recovery from this, as I am sure others on here have advised is rather sporadic and you'll have good days, when if you're anything like me you'll totally overdo it, followed by a bad day (because you overdid it) where you feel back to square one!! I just wanted to give you some hope that eventually you will be able to do the majority of what you want too, with a much better quality of life than you had pre-op. It just takes time, hang in there and keep going.

      Best wishes

      Sandra

One other thing I wanted to ask -- I have pretty severe pain that feels like shards of glass at the bottom of my knee cap. The Dr & PT look at me like I have 3 heads when I describe the pain. X ray shows no problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem?Any idea of what it might be or how long it may last?

Well I’m 17 days after partial knee replacement and can’t seem to balance pain meds they work and knock me out or it’s painful and I can’t do the exercises

Take them on schedule but try to set up work outs an hour to hour and half after taking meds
