Discussion regarding postop anterior THR

Good Afternoon Hippies (i like it since I'm a 60s child!):

Going in for anterior THR 11/14. Have completed pre-op tesing. Can anyone share their expereince with this THR approach? It sounds like the way to go vs, posterior or lateral. The surgeon I have selected has done over 1,000 anterior THRs. As I undestand, experince counts for a lot with this procedure. Thoughts, feedback, comments?

Main thought " JEALOUS " 😢. 4 weeks on from posterior and still struggling, sore can't walk without crutches. I know the anterior approach is longer in theatre but recovery time is hugely reduced along with risk of dislocation. 👍🏽 Although no hip replacement is a walk in the park 😳

Please do keep in touch with us 🙏🏻

😍 Much love hope all hoses amazingly well for you X

Thank you Bobbie102. I know there are pros and cons to the different types of THR. I have chosen to find a surgeon who is very well experienced in the anterior approach (the most important aspect). This least invasive approach makes the most sense and, in my mind and based on thorough reading and research, carries the least risk.

Unfortunately for me I didn't get to experience my anterior surgery because within 3 weeks I found out I dislocated my hip had to have revision going in second time through side of hip. 😩 Has been pretty tough. More pain than I expected! Am 12 weeks out now. Wishing you all the best in your surgery and for a speedy recovery!! 🤗🤗 LD

      Hi linda81469:

I am so sorry to hear you had to go through this surgery twice. Dislocation is uncommon with the anterior approach and is one of the reasons why I am choosing it. Any reason given how/why this happened?

I wish for a speedy recovery now that your second surgery seems to have been successful.

      Thank you

Thank you Erin. I really am not sure. Dr thinks it happened when I twisted. I was going to take a shirt out of a drawer and when I went to shut it I felt a pull then had pain in that operated buttock for a couple of days. Then it went away. I just don't really know. Wishing you all the best in your surgery!! My second is still a rocky one. Having to deal with tightness, bursitis and tendinitis. And a lot of muscle pain.

I had the anterior THR 23 days ago. I'm 63 years old. I took my first steps unassisted yesterday! Very little pain. I was only on pain meds 1 week and then over the counter meds. NO hip precautions. I started therapy and full weight bearing immediately. I could sleep on my side in just a couple days. Driving at 2weeks. Now I just have to continue walking and build muscle strength. I still use the cane and need to master stairs better. Good luck Erin! Hope all goes well.

I'm 62. 11 weeks po. Had anterior and doing great!!  A little rough in the beginning. Most improvement to normal was between 7 and 8 weeks. Up walking within hours. Take your meds, ice and rest often and don't overdo. I'm loving my new hip!!!

      Hi Mollyjr:

Yes, my PT has already advised that "less is more" in the first 2 weeks. Pushing too much early on can create set-backs. Got my iceman ready and list of simple exercise to do in the 1st 2 weeks.

      Thank you
