Distal Radius and Sleeping

Broke distal and ulna. Had surgery which included plate and 8 screws. Cast removed and back for more x rays to see if it is healed. Having trouble sleeping. I have been sleeping elevated on a pillow. Is it safe to go back to sleeping on my side? Break was Nov 21 and surgery was Nov 28th.

I think as long as you're comfortable sleeping on your side it should be fine. After I got my cast off I slept however was comfortable, I had a hard time sleeping in the cast.

Hi Jabekitten, mine is a fractured left humerus plated surgically 29th Nov after 5 months non-union, so in a sense I've been through this twice, first after the break and then again after surgery. I found after 6 or 7 weeks (which is where we are now) that my body just wants to sleep flatter. I moved from a recliner to a bed about that time the first time round, and after 4 weeks the second time, and am getting lower and lower in the bed now. Since having the plate in to fix the arm, I've noticed from about 5 weeks that I want to lie on my side. It's like my brain is urging me to. Whereas when the bone was broken I had no urge to lie on my left, and lying on my right made it ache after a very short time. I've tried it a few times now and actually it's fine. I've even rolled right over on my left to turn off the alarm clock!! I am sure (like doing physio) that your arm will start to ache if you are doing too much. It will let you know. I can't see that you can do any harm, since you have plate and screws in there so maybe be guided by instincts. If in doubt, I'd check with your consultant at your next check-up, but pretty sure they'd say 'do what is comfortable' too.
