Diverticular Disease that won't settle.

I was diagnosed with Diverticulitus in June 2019 , I was in hospital for 4 days, had intravenous antibiotic and pain control. I had another flare in July 2019 in hospital again with same treatment. I started on a liquid diet, then low fibre diet. I keep a food and pain control diary I am eating little and often. my menu consists of Rice Krispies and Banana, yogurt for mid morning ,canned fruit or egg for lunch, yogurt in afternoon, boiled white Rice, egg or Toast for dinner. i have not had any alcohol since being diagnosed. I am still in constant pain left lower stomach , my pain control is 60mg codeine, 2 paracetemols 4 hourly, 5 - 10ml Oromorph as a top up. I am on a waiting list for Colonoscopy, and Specialist appointment. I am unable to work because of the pain and side effects of meds. HELP.

Hi Pamela, I'm sorry to hear how unwell you feel right now. Your story is very similar to mine except I couldn't take any pain medication because of heart medication I'm on. But I also have a very high pain tolerance. Sounds like your doing all the right things. The foods your eating seem pretty mild and bland for your colon which is good. How are your bm's with all that medication? I had 4 flares in 18 months. 2 with abscesses. I had a colon resection this past May 6th. They removed 8 inches of sigmoid colon. All went well with the surgery. I had a combination of laparoscopic and small open. I went in the hospital on Monday was out on Thursday and went shopping Friday. I ate whatever pretty much right away afterwards. I feel like a new person now. At first I didn't want the surgery. Months later I was begging for it. I understand your pain, frustration and sadness having this horrible disease. If you are ever given the option of surgery I would definitely consider it before you get any older and have to have an emergency one and end up with a bag for a few months.

i feel for you. I believe it happens with all foods. I had a large part of my colon removed Nov 2017. Surgeon told me he could not promise I wouldnt have more problem as its further up the colon. Sadly its giving me troubles now and Im terrified of it becoming as bad as before. I was so happy to have the surgery as I was spending more time in hospital than out. Just hang in there...I know people who have had a few bad attacks and then nothing for many years

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation and those of the two who replied previously. I suffer from Diverticulitis, but I'm lucky to be able to add "treats" to my diet without nasty flare-ups. Pasta, rice, potatoes, vegetables, fish and chicken are the staples, also beans and pulses from time to time. I find a banana each day helpful, also Mejool Dates seem to cause no problem. Reading your account has made me realize just how lucky I am in comparison. My flare-ups though regular, are painful but once the episode is over, so is the pain. I'm just beginning to grasp how debilitating and life changing this disease can be, reading the experiences of others like you. I hope, managing your diet and gradually tweaking it eventually reduces the pain and discomfort. Good luck.
