Diverticulitis, food, & spirits .

As my GI physician and Surgeon told me this disease doesn't have a set script for food and drink. I'm staying away from red meat for a bit, and haven't had any alcohol for over 2.5 weeks. What I'd like to know is when can I have a martini or glass of red? What about my favourite cheat meal foods (Mexican, pizza, kebabs, burgers)??? I'm being healthy and conservative with my diet but, I quite like to know when I can have one of my fav dishes/drinks. Any input would be brilliant. Cheers, Jacob.

Did you have open cut or laparoscopic surgery? I had open cut (18 months ago), plus add in some sepsis so my recovery was longer. I always keep in mind that what goes in has to come out. I was not able to have alcohol for over a year, learned the hard way, made me sicker than heck. After my surgery I stayed on the soft bland diet for 8 weeks to give my colon time to completely heal. As for red meat, in moderation because it's hard to digest. Small pieces and chew well. I try to not eat alot of red meat and still am having issues with gassy vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. I've just recently been able to eat broccoli (steamed) in moderation. Each person is different, so this is my experience. I'm still afraid to try fresh uncooked vegetables. I did have 1/2 a hamburger once in a while, pizza (light sauce, watch the grease and spicy meats), careful on the spicy, fried, greasy foods. You just have to do a "trial and error " on pretty much what you eat and remember what upsets your body.

I haven't had surgery yet mate. I just got out of hospital for my 1st diverticulitis attack. Actually I got out last Friday. I was in for four days with a microperforation. Worst pain ever.

Oh wow....you are just starting on the painful journey of diverticulitis. The best advice I can give you is always remember everyone is different. What worked for me may not work for someone else. Be vigilant on what goes in your mouth. Lots of WATER (not alcohol..lol). Watch the fried, spicy, acidic foods, gassy vegetables, absolutely no corn or tomatoes. Moderation is also a key factor. Try not to eat food amount larger than your fist. Apparently your stomach is the size of your fist.
