Dizziness

I have read many of the letters from those of you who also experiencing dizziness.  I have been dealing with this, along with hearing loss, tinnitis, and feeling somewhat "in a fog" for 5+ years.  Along with these maladies, I have issues with my neck.  I personally feel that neck problems are directly related to many of these problems.  I had a sudden death in my family 10 years ago.  Apparently I began clenching my teeth at night from stress.  This led to TMJ, which in turn led to neck problems.  When my neck gets very tight, the ringing in my ears gets pronounced.  When that happens, my hearing is affected, and then I feel "off balance" and dizzy.  At one point, I saw a physical therapist who told me that there was no way that I could possibly feel well - like I was being strangled from the neck pressure - and needed to relax the muscles.  I do think that therapy helped.  There is a book out called "the Neck Connection."  The doctor who wrote it attributes many issues, including all that I mentioned, to neck problems.  I think many people have neck and upper back stress today from sitting in front of computers for long hours.  I would imagine that yoga would be helpful, but as of yet, haven't gone to try it.

I went in for testing for vestibular disease, and was told I didn't have it.  One such disease is Meniere's disease, which has many of these symptoms.  I do sympathize with all of you dealing with feeling dizzy, because it certainly does compromise our quality of life.  I also experience migraines with aura occasionally.  Those too seem to occur when my neck is sore and tight.

I know what your going through.  Have you had a hearing test done?

Hello Linda.  Yes, I had a hearing test around 5 years ago, which showed some hearing loss.  I had that done at the same time that I had the VNG, which tested for Vestibular disease.  That came back "normal."

Are you experiencing similar symptoms, and if so, have you made any progress with treatment?

I completly agree with the link to your neck. Have you continued physical therapy?

      Hello Manda,

No, I haven't gone in for PT in quite a while.  The therapist that I seemed to see improvement with, moved.  The therapists I saw afterwards didn't seem to be helpful, so I stopped going in.

      Are you experiencing similar symptoms?

Last December out of no where I started having vision issues, daily (and I mean dailly) migraines and major dizzy spells that would occur whether I was sitting, standing, walking, driving. After nearly a year of tests, medications and multiple specialists it turned out to be that my neck had extended so far forward and also 5 degrees to the left that it was putting pressure on my brain stem and cerebellum. I am in the process of starting treatment that involves massage therapy several times a week and chiropractic adjustment but I'm only a few weeks in. Saw the x ray though and was pretty disturbed that the same information showed up on the CT scan and both MRIs but it took months more before I got a diagnosis.

Sounds familiar. I am now on my fourth specialist, a spinal surgeon, to have another look at the mri as the neuro and radiologists can't agree...after I initially saw an ENT. ...and so it goes on...

Oh wow!  Amazing what all happened to you and I am happy for you that you were able to find the cause.  Just seems so logical that neck dysfunction can cause these problems.  I'm happy to hear that surgery hasn't been mentioned for you.  I hope that your therapy is the answer.

Chris - have you tried any type of massage therapy or adjustments?

Not yet....the mri shows severe stenosis c3 to c6 and some signal issues that they can't agree the significance of...hence neuro looking for MS, radiologist wondering if artefacts or lesions and ent giving up when brain mri clear. Spinal is looking to see how bad it is relative to symptoms! I had to explain the radiologists to my GP to get the referral.....!

I don't know whether massage therapy or manipulation of your neck would relieve severe stenosis, but I think it's worth looking into.

Being a migraine sufferer, on MRI, small white spots show up on the surface of my brain.  My neuro said that those are common, and are in and of themselves, really of no consequence.  They are different than the lesions that occur with MS.  Obviously, we can't all relate totally, since our bodies are different.  But, certain things sound very familiar, and there really does seem to be a "neck connection" like that physician wrote in his book.  I hope that you are able to find your solution soon.

Thing is I have no pain, just crappy neuro symptoms and the dizzyness...they weren't looking for stenosis and I only had the mri on my insistence as I was sure vest neuritis wasn't right....GP said anxiety, cue my smirk when presenting the neuro report... :-)

I hope both of you are able to avoid a surgical procedure. I was so relieved to be given a non surgical option as well as a non medicated option. I am still recovering from all the different medications they tried on me, I felt like a guinea pig

I don't know about being told you have anxiety, but logically when you're not feeling well, you're not in the "happy place" of peace!

I agree with manda - am avoiding any surgical procedures unless I absolutely have no other choice.  Any time a fusion is done, within time, the discs both above and below "suffer" and will likely need to be worked on as well.  Obviously, surgery is sometimes the only treatment, but just know that for a fact before ever subjecting yourself to it.

I'm seeing the spinal guy in a week or so, I'll let you all know...I always suspected the neck, how many times was I told no!

Good luck, i hope it goes well. If you are given a surgical and non surgical option I would strongly suggest you go the non surgical route first. in my line of work many colleagues have had back problems and 2 that had surgeries had to have more.

Of course, your situation may require it, I don't want to seem close minded if that is your only option, just wanted to share that it has been problematic for SOME people.
