Dizziness

I've been dizzy for almost five weeks straight. From the beginning it SLOWLY  got better over about three weeks until I had one day where I seemed symptom free. Then the next day I was slammed so severely that I couldn't even walk! I also have a headache, vertigo, tiredness, jerky eye movements and stiff neck. Could it be Meniere's? My mother had it, but shouldn't it only last 30 minutes to 24 hours and then stop? It really doesn't stop except for the one day. I'm very discouraged. So far all I've been sent for is PT for the Empley Maneuver. I've had to wait almost five weeks for that-it's in four days now. I'm discouraged.

Sounds like what I have. I was diagnosed in October. Get to an ENT asap. In the mean time avoid caffine, small amounts of Salt, and no alcohol. You can some dramumine or Bonnie over the counter at the Drug Store. That will help with the dizziness.

Hi Barb.  So sorry to hear about your vertigo problems.  It might be Meniere's if you also have tinnitus (noise in one or both ears) and fullness/pressure in same ear.  I suggest you visit an ENT (ear/nose/throat) specialist doctor.  He will administer an audio test measuring your hearing capacity.  If he/she finds that you have hearing lose in the low decible range and you have other symptoms described above, it's probably Meniere's Disease.  He would probably treat you initially with a diuretic (reduce fluid retention in ears),  a steroid antiinflamatoryand Ativan to help control the vertigo, and recommend low salt diet.  This combination usually helps 60-70% of MD sufferers.  GOOD LUCK!!

Have they not done anything to rule out anything else? Your symptoms are suggesting some sort of viral etiology is going on. Are you having fevers (even low grade), can you easily touch your chin to your chest? You could have menieres but that does not keep something else from going on to exacerbate your symptoms.

I agree with all the replies: you need to be seen by ENT for a proper diagnosis.

Have Menieres Disease.  Attacks have subsided forthe past few days, bt the fulness and tinitus is so bad.  Any suggestions please on how to get the horrible noise and fulness to subside.  I am on Betahistine and Hygroton tablets.  Not helping much.  When the fullness and tinnitus is really bad, which is nearly every day, I just have to lie down and try and block my ear.  The funny thing is now Im just getting the fullness and tinnitus without the vertigo and nausea.  Has anyone else experienced this sensation.  Thanks

Hi Maria.  I've found that Ativan (sedative) is particularly effective for controlling inner ear issues such as loud tinnitus and ear pressure.  I take 0.5mg up to three times/day when symptoms are particularly annoying.  I take 0.25mg twice/day as a maintenance amount. Also make sure you are on a very low salt diet and avoid caffeine and alcohol.  These aggrevate inner ear nerves and can create tinnitus/fullness.

I've just started Betahistine and starting to get a rash on neck/chest.  Not sure if I'll be able to continue this med....will discuss with Dr. on Monday.

GOOD LUCK in your struggle with MD.
