Dizziness and imbalance

I am 44 and am been suffering from vertigo for years now. It became worse the last 2 years. I have a mild prolapse and stiffness in the neck but the doctors say it can't cause that severe condition. I have gone through a long term of physiotherapy mainly retraction but no way. For the last 6 months i am almost walking on water. I lost my balance. I can't stand for even a few minutes. I can walk but totally dizzy. I can't even go shopping or do my daily activities. I want a way out of it. I am no longer able to work as i am an assistant professor at university and can't stand or write on the board. Do you think there is a way out of this? I started taking antidepressants. I feel i am living dead. Any suggestions please and if you think it is bppv, is epley maneuvering good for it? Please help me if you can. Almost lost hope

Hi. I had my first bout of vertigo 7 years ago I was prescribed betahistine dihydrochloride which helped at the time. 4 yrs ago I suffered again really bad was referred to ENT did epley manoeuvre had various tests at BRI all came back normal. Doc said was MAV prescribed propranolol didn’t help made me worse as my blood pressure went very low. Was then given amitriptyline didn’t help also. Went back to my GP who then gave me cinnarizine once I collected realised couldn’t use them as they made me drowsy no good around machinery which is my job! I carried on using the betahistine when I felt bad which always helped. I’m currently off work again due to another horrible time of dizziness. The epley manoeuvre does work for some ppl not others try it. What sensation do you have when walking, standing or going about daily jobs? I’ve read up on vestibular mograines which from what I’ve read that’s more of my symptoms than MAV also my friend is a massage therapist so I’m once again booking a course of head n neck massages which I felt helped relieve my symptoms on my last bad episode! Any questions just ask

Thanks a lot dear. Hope i will find the real reason behind my vertigo as Arab doctors in my area deal with it as a trivial matter while it is really giving me a very hard time.

Try Epley maneuver done by an expirienced physiotherapist, it has helped me

i also have evaluated my neck by a chiropractor, and have had a few sessions.

    Good luck to you.

The best and simple solution for this type of dizziness is to brisk walk every morning for 30 minutes . No medicines needed. Trust me , this will change your life.

Vertigo is a symptom, not a disease. They have to do a bunch of tests to rule out causes and figure out if it's a inner ear thing first. Once that's determined they test for what inner ear disorder. Vestibular migraines, bppv, etc. It's a long process. The vestibular system is very complexed. Not alot of specialists deal with it. Bppv, even untreated, usually will settle down over time. Just takes longer. The loose crystal will find a place to settle, brain will retrain to deal with it's false signals. The epely will only help if it's bppv and done properly. You need to know which side it is first . If you do the epely for right side, and it's your left ear, you will make it much worse. A doc or therapist can do the hal-pike first to determine which ear it is.

Thanks a lot but the problem is that doctors in my country know the least about vertigo. I kept moving from one doctor to another for years now. I have gone through a nerve test, a balance test, MRI for brain, MRI for the neck ...etc. the last 4 doctors i have seen recently said it is bppv. The doctors i saw 2 months ago said it is related to the mild prolapse in the neck. Maybe it is both and that's what makes dizziness and imbalance really severe. In brief, doctors care the less for vertigo believing it is just a symptom as you said and not a disease but it is really giving me a very hard time. My life has almost stopped for long now. Thanks for your care

It's not just your country. Vertigo, when caused by vestibular issues, is very hard to diagnose. It's a specialty. Not only is it a specialty some docs refuse to admit they just don't know what's wrong. Try to give a quick diagnosis. We call it treat and street. It took me 12 years to get a proper diagnosis and a referral to a doc who deals specifically with these issues. I have to go 3 hours from where I live to get to his office. I was treated for years as bppv. It was not bppv. It never got better. Only got worse. My new doc said bppv doesn't last 12 years constantly. It can come and go. Mine continued to get worse. Finally it came and didn't go. Vertigo every day. Dizzy 24/7. It could no longer be written off as bppv. I was diagnosed with menieres last year after 11 years of being treated for the wrong diagnosis. It has been 19 months since I had a day without vertigo attacks. I am dizzy 24/7. Not just light headed, very dizzy. I had endolymphatic sac decompression surgery and a shunt installed last week. First step was limit salt intake. No chocolate, caffeine, alcohol. Given diuretics to try to get rid of excess fluid in inner ear. When that failed they try injections in the ear to kill nerves sending false signals to the brain. It also didn't work. If this last surgery doesn't work, they go in and cut the nerves. That will stop the false signals.

    Greetings from Ecuador, Gjgi.

My name is Freddy A. and I have vertigo since I was a child, I had a strong crisis when I was in high school, from there I have panic attacks and sometimes a feeling of floating or dizziness.Maybe you have panic attacks, like you, I sometimes feel imbalance when walk. I tell you that the attacks of panic produces tachycardia, disorientation, a sense of anguish as if someone died. The neurologist who treats me several years ago treats me with PAXIL, it is a medication that does not cause addiction, in your case I recommend that medication is of great help in these cases as it helps control panic attacks better, these Panic attacks are so common, they occur suddenly without cause.I recommend you, walk or exercise daily.I send you a lot of positive energy so that you overcome this moment and that you manage to cope with this suffering in your life.

Apologies my english is not very good.
