Dizziness in bed

Hi , I  am having an op in the next few months and have been told I will have to lay flat on my back for several weeks afterwards. Trouble is when I am flat on my back I have  dizzy spells where my balance goes all of a sudden. And whilst it only lasts for seconds, it scares me to death. It doesn't happen every night or all night or anything but it happens enough to concern me.  Several years ago I woke up severely dizzy and was scared to death. Lasted 30 seconds but it felt more like 30 years! Doc said it was BPPV. And that it can happen when you turn over in bed. These recent attacks arent as bad as that but Im not turning over or anything. Im just lying there quite still. Can do without this right now. Anyone else been in this situation? Its not good.

Go onto the Facebook page of VEDA and ask on there.  They are pretty good as professionals also answer questions.  It.s also a web site and very informative.

If you have trouble with bppv when you lay on your back you need to be dicussing this with your doctor and sergon before your operation. Maybe there is a way to help you during your recovery to keep you from feeling sick the whole time. Keeping your head positioned at a 10-15 degree angle can help but sleeping propted up may not be an option? Is it? Maybe even renting a hospital bed that can keep your raised at an angle while keeping your body flat. It may sound or look funny but anything is worth it to not have to experince vertigo the whole time.

Hi nodizzy, Thanks for your message. Yes I am going to speak to surgeon and anesthetist before my op about my dizzy spells. Its at the front of my mind to do so. Will have to see about keeping my head at a 10 to 15° angle. Im hoping that I will be able to be propped up in bed with my body flat. Time will tell. Will try anything to avoid the dizziness. Thanks again.

Let me know what the surgen says. If your able to sleep propted up look into a simbalance pillow. It has been so hepful at keeping veritog attacks at bay. It keeps you propted up at the proper angle and because of it's design it won't move out from under you, which might be very helpful during your recovery. Also by moving your head from side to side even if only on your back it should help keep rock crystals from settling which the pillow is designed to help with. Of course this will only be helpful if you able to be propted up some. Good luck with everything and I hope you recovery well.
