Dizziness / unsteadiness feeling

I hope someone, somewhere can shed some light on my problem so apologies if it is quite a long extract.   For over a year now I experience what i call 'attacks' or 'funny turns'.   Out of the blue i can suddenly get more of an unsteady feeling rather than a 'spinning' dizziness feeling.  It can happen anytime, when i am sitting down or standing.  I had an MRI scan last November apart from a calcified menigioma which they found (apparently this is nothing to worry about) they put it down to migrainous dizziness.   I will probably have another MRI later in the year as a follow up.  I am just so confused as to why i get this feeling and what could be causing it.  I've thought of everything from MS to heart problems etc I've had lots of blood tests and ECG etc and it doesn't seem to be heart related.  Does anyone else have similar symptoms?

Yes Carina! I'm 53 & had these feelings since I turned 44.... Doctor laughed at me back then & so did the next doctor I saw. I've had no tests as it's impossible at our surgery to get much done needless to say I have no confidence in any doctor. Where I live we have one surgery & no other to choose from. I'm not one for going to Docs much so that actually put a lid on it. I gave up my career & managed to get a wee part time job but in the end had to give that up also. My wee funny turns go from feeling as if someone has just gently shoved me or slight imbalance, spaced out feeling, the ground gently moving & im not like when your on a boat! Staggering for no reason! It's crazy... I have recently had about 4 months with nothing it's been great! Two weeks ago it came back, I do think stress adds to it too! This week I have not gone anywhere as I can feel the imbalance comes out of nowhere it's been a miserable 10 years in total and it's still happening! Sorry I can't be more positive but Ivthinkvthis kind of makes one feel empty as no doctor will help! Big hugs xx

hello Trevis, thanks for taking the time to reply back.  Yes, i can relate to similar symptoms to yours, i can describe it too like someone has just gently pushed me and i feel off balance when i am walking.  It really knocks my confidence and i had a day off work last week because of it.  I was originally prescribed Stemetil and also Amitryptaline but i'm not taking these now.  I'm got an appointment next week about it with a Consultant so i'll mention that i'm still getting these feelings.  I've had a hearing test too and some tests where you have to walk from heel to toe in a straight line and balance tests with eyes closed.  I don't think they know what is causing it but i need to get to the bottom of it as it is affecting my day to day life.  I'm going to hopefully get some sort of answers next week or maybe have some further testing arranged.  I will keep you posted.

Yes I live in the UK, where are you from? I do hope to get answers however long it takes. I have never really suffered from migraines but it was mentioned as 'migranous dizziness' (which I had never heard of before) as sometimes I get frontal headaches with the unsteady feeling. I have

Googled balance disorders, heart disorders, dizziness, ear disorders like Menteres disease in the hope I can pinpoint my symptoms but so far have not come up with a solution. I just can't bear the thought of being told 'there's nothing wrong'.

So you are very familiar then with the NHS system :-).  I'm sure you agree but it is very hard to explain and describe the symptoms to people (and the medics).  If it was just straightforward 'dizziness' then at least that would be a little bit easier but mine (and probably yours too) is a feeling of 'swaying', unsteadiness, off-balance is the only way i can describe it.  As i am writing this now (sitting down), i am getting the 'swaying' feeling with a pressure on frontal forehead, i even think sometimes i'm having a stroke but if there was any issue like that (ie with blood vessels etc) i'm sure it would have been picked up by the MRI scan.  I'm not even sure if the 'calcified menigioma' is causing it.  As i said earlier, i am going to chat about it to the Consultant when i see her next week and hope to get some answers and will let you know how i get on.  My appointment is next Thursday.  All the best.

Update - I saw consultant today, she is now going to refer me for some more indepth balance tests for 3 weeks time, in the meantime she's prescribed me some medication to take when I get one of my attacks. At least I am getting looked at.

      Hi Carina,

Been following your discussion with Trevis. An MRI would definitely have picked up a stroke. I had one 3 years ago and now, recently, Vertigo and Dizziness. I can relate to your symptoms, but in addition it disrupts me at night. This morning I woke at 4am and had to get up. Agree it is very debilitating. I have been prescribed Betahistine, which helps to a certain extent. I have come to the conclusion there is no cure, we just have to manage to the best extent possible. Sorry to hear Trevis relate the experience with the doctor, mine was fairly sympathetic, understands the condition. I've had blood tests, which show I have an underactive thyroid, which I believe is quite common for people suffering with this.

Hope you resolve your issues soon

      Best wishes Pauline

Hello, just thought i would update you and say that i had my balance tests done this morning and now will have to wait for the report and i need to go back in Sept.  The 2nd part of the testing was having warm water poured down my ears which brought on the dizzy feelings that i get so that was a bit scary but it soon subsided.  The Audiologist was great and really made me feel at ease.  I do have some tablets now which i can take if i ever get these dizzy spells again so it's reassuring to have these although the good news is that i have only had to take one since i was prescribed them.  I will await for the report in eager anticipation.  Will update once i get it but it probably won't be until the end of September.  Hope you are well.
