Dizzy and feeling like crap

Good day all.

I've been suffering with dizziness and other symptoms now for a month. I hope there is someone out there that can identify with me or give me some advise... or hope.  I am off to see the E.N.T in two days, so I hope things can get sorted then. I will update you on the outcome of my E.N.T visit.

This is my profile:

* I'm 40 years old

* I had a bad flu a month ago

* Three days into the flu, I started getting dizzy

* My GP then prescribed cortisone treatment (Panafcort 5mg and Serc)

* After a week the dizziness did not disappear, so I went back and this time she put me on antibiotics (Amoclan and some tablets for vertigo / travel sickness.)

* She diagnosed it could be middle ear infection and that medication cannot really reach those areas around the ear, as they are very small and narrow. She further said it could take up to 10-14 days for the symptomes to ease down. She said if it doesn't ease, a visit to an E.N.T is inevitable.

* So this is now 14 days after treatment and I still feel crap, so that is why I decided to go see an E.N.T

* I am very dizzy, even when I'm lying down.

* The right side of my face (and gums) started going numb the past 5 days (no drooping or paralyses, just numb. I do feel sensation when I touch my cheek. It feels more like "rubber.")

* In the mornings when I wake up, I have double sight which eases down after a few minutes.

* Working on the pc like I do now, poses challenges as I feel even more dizzy.

* Feeling warm or tired flares up the symptoms.

* Stress and being upset also contributes to feeling more tired and dizzy.

I am really dispaired by now for being so distorted and out of touch with my enivornment.

I really hope there is a simple explanation and treatment for this, and that it will be sorted after my visit to the E.N.T. I must admit, I am scared. I am otherwise a very healthy person and this really freaks me out now.

Is there anyone else out there sharing these symptoms or can add with some advise?

Best wishes to those suffering from something similar. It is beyond unpleasant.

    Hi suekey,sorry to hear how you are feeling. Join the club. I am also quit fit  and I to have these awful dizzy feelings but mine are only when standing or sometimes whilst walking, supermarkets are the worse and if I have to queue for something I go without. Had a scan and hearing test but nothing ,now waiting for vestibular test. Fed up with it. Hope you get to the bottom of your trouble.

    hi Suekey, I can completely relate to your story. mine started out as feeling a little under the weather and slightly dizzy as the days went by I would feel even dizzier. by the 4th day I was so dizzy I couldn't t out of bed. I stayed 3 days in the hospital had all kinds of tests and eventually they ruled out everything and said it must be the crystals in my ear are  loose so they had a thrapist cotme in and do the eppley manuever. If that had been my problem I would've felt better almost instantly. unfortuntely that was'nt my problem. an E.N.T.  diagnosed me as having labriynthitis. essentially at some point I must've had a headcold or some sort and the virus attacked and damaged the inner labriynth. leaving my brain to try to recalculate its new center. I did have ongoing pain and infection with a tooth roughly 2 months before hand. who knows what caused it? as time as gone by with the help of vestibular therapyI have got quite a bit better. it has been  almost 17 weeks now and I still feel a little off but it's manageable. I can drive and shop and get around. you are correct on stress, lack of sleep and for me too much caffienne really make it worse. I was told that you want to expose yourself to busy situations. like grocery shopping. it requires you to look up and down aisles and take in everything. like the vestibular therapy, you relearn where your new center is. when I first started the therapist had me stand with one foot directly in front of the other and I lost my balance. I was shocked at how off balance I was. I am 40 years old and have never had a balance problem in my life yet there I stood like bambi on ice trying to keep from falling over. I was told it would go away in 4-6 weeks and clearly at 17 weeks I still have a touch of dizziness. I noticed a lot of people on here has had it for longer than their Dr. said but it does get better. hang in there.

      Thanks so much for your response Crystal.  Now you mention the tooth... in March this year I had a abses in my one tooth, I was on strong antibiotics and then had the tooth extracted. Since that time, I noticed some numbness around that area in the gum, thinking a nerve might have been damaged during the extraction.  I will mention this to the E.N.T as it might be related?  I had no pain in my ears when I had the flu, that is why I was puzzled that I was treated for middle-ear infection. Like you, I've never had balancing or health issues. So I am totally taken aback with this condition.  I do not want to self diagnose, but I did research on Google with my symptoms and labarynthitis keeps popping up.

      So joining this forum is very informative as I can identify with what people are posting.  I am stressing about my condition and that is why I am going to the E.N.T to set my mind at rest and get some help.  I am hoping he can help me a bit, I have a good friend's wedding this Saturday and I don't want to miss it!  But I know it will be difficult for me, as I know by now that noise and exhaustion will probably cause me to go home early.  sad I am doing my best to carry on as normal as possible.  I go to work and even drive.  I have to "work very hard" at it though, I won't lie.  Although I have support and help from my husband, he cannot be there 24/7. I need to still perform my daily tasks as far as possible.  I do some of the balancing excersises I found on the internet, it does bring a bit of relief but yes... I need more than that!

      I honestly hope all of us on this forum can soon bounce back to our old, healthy selves again!

    I just want to update you all here on this forum.  I've had a brain MRI and long, intense consultation with a neurologist. Things have moved very fast for me since Friday when I saw the E.N.T and he could find nothing wrong with my ears or my sinuses.  He immediately referred me for the brain MRI, consulted with the neurologist who placed me on a heavy doze of IV cortisone for 5 days.  And yesterday I was already in the rooms of the neurologist. I'm due for a few more tests today - blood tests, chest x-rays and kidney sonars.  So far all the signs are there that I am suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, causing my balance problem as my serebellum is currently the affected area.  There are indictions that I have been suffering "attacks" for a significant time, but did not realize it.

    I will know final results within the next two weeks and what the way forward will be like for me.

    All I want to say here, is I learned a lesson. Do not "play" with your symptoms and wait until it gets better. Here in South Africa medical services are very expensive, even if you have medical insurance.  But I have to do this as I am young, my child is young and I want to live a full, happy and normal live.

    Please proceed to specialists who can assist you. Do not wait.  Time is not only money, but it is also your health at stake.

    I will revert as I am getting wiser on this condition, but I guess I have to join a forum here that will assist me now with MS information and support.

    Best of luck to you all, take care.
