DLA for children

Hi everyone my daughter is 13 years old she has ADHD, dyslexia, insomnia and just recently diagnosed with NEAD (non epileptic attack disorder) she also has anxiety and stress which can cause great anger within her. I have been advised to claim DLA for her but after looking at the forms i am kinda put off by the questions asked and not really sure if i should even attempt to claim DLA for her

Any advice please or if anyone else has claimed DLA for their child, i would really appreciate your input

Thanks Samare

    Hi Samare,

Have you got a social worker for your child? You can get help filling in the form with a CAB worker, but a Social Worker would have more chance of getting your daughter through the various processes of DLA. It is always best to try for DLA if you have a child with problems like you have mentioned. A social worker or doctors letter can easily back up your claim should you need it.

Many people get put off by the questions on a DLA form, but if filled in correctly sometimes they will even let a face to face examination to be omitted. A NEAD also comes under a Functional Episode which is like Epilepsy without any movements, etc.

Once DLA is awarded and depending on your circumstances you can claim Carers Allowance, as well as other things for children under 15 or 17 years.

      Hi Samare,

You are welcome. I would ask your doctor if they could write a letter to backup your claim, to start with. If your daughter sees any consultants on a regular basis then these can be listed in the DLA form, if you cannot fit them in the space provided then add the answers on additional sheets of paper, the same applies for any other areas where you cannot fit information in.

CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) will also help you with filling in various parts, if need be. If you have any reports from specialists concerning your daughter then send copies of these as well. The more information you can supply the better the chance you have of increasing your childs score by ATOS.

If your daughter is in a mainstream school and constantly needs "Special Needs" in education then state how many hours are currently required. Again, if her school has given you any reports on your daughters behavour.

Because your daughter suffers from insomnia it would be a good idea for applying for DLA, the Care Component High Rate covers problems which are encountered throughout the night. Broken sleep is actually worse than having no sleep at all, so it worth applying for.

Applying for DLA or PIP as it is being changed to in your circumstances would be a good idea, I know the actual form does look daunting to fill in, but you could be claiming, it will be backdated if you are awarded the claim.

      HopeĀ  that helps,

      Regards,

      Les.
