Do anal fissures get infected?

Been dealing with two chronic fissures that reopened recently. I also have a bruise caused by severe constipation. After taking laxatives for years, they're not working so good. I eat healthy alot of the time but my stool is still difficult and can be like gravel and hard at times. After years of being told by doctors that I dont have a fissure I finally saw a surgeon. He said he saw I have a severe fissure where the muscle is showing and a bruise on a skin tag. The other fissure is inside and I can feel it tearing on several occassions. I'm using GTN and coconut oil, sometimes calmoseptine. I'm surprised I have survived all these years with them, I guess once laxatives worked I would be ok. But then they would stop working and i have straining causing retearing. an interesting situation was taking place this whole time and doctors thought I was nuts. Every time the fissure healed and reopened I would need even softer stool than before to heal it until I could only pass liquid to mushy stool. The slightest pressure and hardness caused tearing. I feel hopeless most of the time now because if I cant keep stool soft what will I do?

Oh Sara I'm sorry to hear this. How awful that doctors did not listen to you. My doctor told me that yes, they can become infected and sometimes antibiotics are needed. So far mine has not, thankfully. But like you laxatives have lost some effectiveness with me after years of use. Gravel is always the start with me even though I drink a lot of water and eat very carefully. Have you ever had an endoscopy? My last one revealed that my colon had been stretched from the years of constipation, so it is next to impossible to drink enough water to stop the stool drying out.

I completely understand about losing the will to live. I've had issues for 5 years on and off. Now combined the fissure with a thrombosed hemorrhoid. I recently turned 50 and wonder if I have the strength to make it to 51. My pain leaves me writhing on the bed all day, about an hour after a BM. But we must carry on, somehow, and get through each day. If it wasn't for Covid I'd be pursuing botox and/or surgery, because I can't do a damn thing. Even a wee hurts.

Try and stay focussed, as exhausting as it can be. Keep informed, talk to your specialist. Folks here on the forum are always supportive because we understand when most people don't x

I totally feel your pain. I'm not sure if it can get an actual infection to be honest, but it can be incredibly painful. I have to find a perfect balance between soft but not too soft because diarrhea can cause an insane amount of pain for me. I don't use laxatives, but I eat prunes, pears, peaches, nectarines, and whole wheat products and oat bran. These really help give a good consistency. Also, when I have a bowel movement, I lean forward and to the left where I'm resting most pressure on my left butt cheek. It helps the sphincter not stretch so much. It's also important that it's cleaned well because for me I've noticed if it isn't fully clean, it's super painful also. So I take a sitz bath after ever bowel movement and really that's my saving grace! It helps with pain and cleans the area properly without damage. I'm looking into doing the LIS surgery. I've been dealing with this being severely painful for 8 months and I just can't live like this anymore. I tried creams and I did a botox injection about 3 months ago. This past weekend I was bed ridden from the pain. It's not a quality of life. Hope this helps you!
