Do I have an Achilles Tendon re-rupture?

Hi all,

Would welcome any comments if you've had ATR. I ruptured my AT (partial tear) 20th sept whilst playing basketball. Did not receive surgery saw one consultant who said 8-9 weeks with 3cm heel lifts (plantar flexion) non weight bearing in airboot cast. Wasn't entirely happy with this so got second opinion from an ortho surgeon who's allegedly one of the best in the country. He changed protocol to the more contemporary thinking with physio and weight bearing from week 4 as tolerated.  Week 8 boot came off he was happy with healing, have continued physio am week 10 now am due to return to work next week but since my physio session on Thursday, the area around the tear is in quite a bit of pain. Tender to touch some swelling.  I'm really concerned I've re-ruptured or is this normal after physio.?

I'm in bad luck with AT, did complete rupture in other leg and had surgery 10 years ago, so needless to say I'm very down in the dumps.

Thank you for your comments!

Can you press with your toes ok? I've had a similar protocol, though with 6 weeks partial weight bearing before off last friday and start of physio. Only exercises this week, pushing against a rubber band, balance exercises and gentle toe lifts. Sitting down, feet flat on the floor, I can lift the bad leg onto the toes though the strength is bad theres no pain. I think if you can do that its not re-popped, but I'm no medic. That was for me the clearest symptom when it first went

      Hi Tim,

Thanks for reply, I can press with my toes although leg is weak. There is a stinging sensation occasionally at the site of the injury which is on the inside of my leg behind ankle bone!  Very sore to press on it! I have physio Wednesday so will see I'm really hoping it's intact!  I'm us in one crutch and getting about slowly!  This all could be as a result of rigorous physio got some pretty deep tissue massage last Thursday!  Best of luck with your recovery will keep you posted!

I think the leg muscles are pretty weak from lack of use, so its going to take time to get back to strength again, I probably overdid my walking today, xmas shops and market, but the first time out of the boot... generally sore foot bones, but so far no tendon pain, I think I get the deep massage next session, monday week. Keep posting!

The deep massage is hard going but worth it. I'm also doing ultra sound tens and cryotherapy, the latter is brilliant for inflammation although freezing!  I've been using a golf ball to roll around under foot this is quite painful as the tendons shorten in sole of foot too,but it is a good exercise.  Well done to you doing Xmas shopping not even on my radar yet.  Great that you don't have any pain, that's my concern the sensation in the tendon!   I'm flying to London Friday week so hopefully I will be ok!  Back to work tomorrow after 2 months so will see how I cope!

First week done at work..! Was on one crutch but physio put me back on two as I wasn't walking heel to toe correctly!  She feels my tendon is intact but that I'm having difficulty with lower calf muscles which connect to AT.  Still have a lot of pain and I have a gut feeling all us not well with AT but seeing consultant in 2 weeks so holding out til then!  Flying to london next weekend so that should be  fun on crutches....!
