do i have fibromyalgia??

Hi there I am 21 years old and I have recently come across fibromyalgia by coincidence and haven't intentionally been trying to self-diagnose myself. I currently suffer with lumbar and cervical slipped discs which have got progressively worse for the last 4 years, I had a laminectomy in December last year on my lumbar discs which has unfortunately made little difference. I have had various tests for disease/conditions related to this but there has been no specific cause or accident to my back problems. Over the last few years I have been struggling more and more with other health problems including irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety constant tiredness and feeling lethargic (this in particular has got worse recently and I feel like not a day goes by where I dont feel exhausted and no matter how much I sleep I do not feel refreshed! I also get very little deep sleep abd dream a hell of a lot at night and can recall my dreams when I wake up. My ability to handle pain has also become very low in recent years as well with a mere poke feeling like I am bruised and I regularly bump into things and feel like I am going to be sick from the pain!! I am fully aware that these things may genuinely be separare health problems or directly related to my back problems. I am at a point now where I am just feeling so fed up of it all and feel like peeple treat me like a hypochondriac. It took me nearly. 3 years to even get an mri for my back problems from my gp so they aren't extremely helpful, I mentioned fibromyalgia at my last appointment with very little outcome apart from being prescribed some anti depressants because I got a little emotional when talking about my health. I also take naproxen, methocarbamol and tramadol on a daily basis now which take the edge off but I have to avoid the latter when at work as I find it difficult to function in a customer facing role and driving to and from work as well.

I work full time and have done so since leaving school. I manage this okay but struggle with things around the home like housework as it leaves me aching all over and very tired. Any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated to a person just looking for some closure. thank you in advancd :-)

    Hi there,

just wan to let you know that someone has read your thread.  i suffer daily with pain in most parts of my body and take tramadol 4x daily and feel like a zombie but this is how i manage to get through the day.  i do not work as the problems have become chronic and as yet like yourself have no sound cause of this.  i have a very good gp who is very understanding she has run blood tests to rule out arthuritise which it did, she refured me to the hospital and i have had 2 MRI scans to rule out disc problems which it has and the hospital have signed me off back to the care of my GP who i will be seeing on the 12th and have to ask her to refere me to a rheumtologist to have further test carried out and to discuss the possability of my problem being fibro.  at the age of 51 the body is not as young lol.

Why dont you see another GP at the sugery and explain to them the problem and mention Fibro to them and ask for a referal to see a rheumatologist.

i hope that you find out answers and find someone to see yo through this tough time.

sending you gent hugs, you are not alone with this.  keep posting and popping in to read others ails and laughter.

As i think you know already, your symptoms can be caused by many different things. Just check you've had blood tests for levels of Vit.d., iron and magnesium and thyroid as they all can mimic most of your symptoms. I agreee with the try a different gp idea as you might find one a lot more understanding and more wiling to take up your cause to find a dignosis. Fibromyalgia has classic tender points on the body so if you google the body map on fibromyalgia you could see if your tender areas correspond to those on the map (its just a general guide) Good luck! cheesygrinJK
