Do I have sciatica

Hi. Due to having bad fasciculations in my left calf I was recently given a emg by a neurologist and I was told that i have denervation and he was able to make the muscle fib. I also have some numbness down my left calf and foot and fasciculations in my right calf.
When I got home i Googled this information and it came up with very worring and distressing answers so I phoned my doctor who got in touch with the neuro and he said it mabe due to Sciatica but I do not have a bad back at the moment although i tend to put my back out once or twice a year. The only pain im getting is the occasional ache (or pain ) which is below my left buttock and stretches to above the back of my knee.
Thanks in advance for any insight people may have on this.

Hi Jboo, I've never had the fasciculations you mention, but all the other symptoms you mention are very familiar and ones I've suffered with over the years as a result of Sciatica.
The symptoms came and went over varying periods of time for me and in the first instance, I was prescribed with pain killers and anti inflammatories, which I have to say, didn't really help too much. My first attack lasted months, but subsequent ones usually a matter of days or at most a couple of weeks or so, the pain and numbness was in pretty much the same areas that you mention in your post.
I tried lots of different treatments such as physio, chiropractor, accupuncture, osteopath, but none helped, although I know others do say they have had relief from one or more of these.
However, my problems have worsened in the last 12 months and pain and numbness/tingling in my legs got much worse, so following an MRI scan, I finished up having to have microdiscectomy surgery and more recently as syptoms re-appeared, I've had a Laminectomy in a second operation as well as removal of some more of the offending disc. Too early to say if this operation has worked or not in my case, but I am of course, hopeful that it will have.
If I was in your shoes, I would definitely visit your doctor and see if he can refer you to a specialist/send you for an MRI scan (which I am thankful I had) to reveal the source of any problems.
Good luck with this and hopefully it will clear up without the need of an operation, as mine has over the years, until the last 12 months, of course.
