Do I have SVT?
Posted , 5 users are following.
For quite some time now I've had a dull ache in my heart, then sudden sharp pains, may be a few times an hour.
A week ago I suffered what I thought was a mini stroke, although the consultant said he doesn't think it was one I'm waiting for the results of an MRI scan.
Since the above episode my heart now has a constant more prominent ache, and the frequency and duration of the sharp pains have increased to a couple of times a minute.
My mother had SVT many years ago and had surgery to fix it.
Do my symptoms sound like SVT?

I've never had pain, I'm just really aware of my heartbeat. When I go into SVT its like a switch, my heart rate will go from 60 to 180+ instantly, and I realise it right away. Never any pain, although that's just my experience.
Are you aware of your heartbeat? Does your heart just randomly start racing while resting?

Yes I can feel my heartbeat alot (palpitations). I can be sat on the sofa for ages and not be do anything and it just comes on. Sometimes 120bpm while resting.

You should get a monitor from your doctor to record these episodes.
Although, it could be anxiety. Do you feel anxious at all? Maybe after your mini stroke you've became anxious about your health, this is not uncommon.

By themselves, Paul, those symptoms would not be good indicators of SVT. Here's hoping the scan results are encouraging for you. Take care

Hi Paul,
I've never had any pain like you are referring to and i don't think pain is typically a symptom of SVT but, you did mention the palpitations and sudden rapid heartbeat which is very typical of SVT. If you haven't done so, I agree, time for a monitor to catch these abnormal heart beats and get a proper diagnosis. Monitors are pretty easy to deal with. Just stick them on your chest and that's it. If you do get a monitor, get one that you where for 2 weeks. Better chance of catching abnormalities that way. SVT can be a very difficult diagnosis to make so keep after it with your doctors. See a specialist in cardiac electrophysiology/arrythmias so you can get properly evaluated. Last thing, SVT and anxiety go hand in hand for most patients with undiagnosed SVT and, anxiety can give you all kinds of weird symptoms like chest pain, numbness, tingling, etc. Good luck and keep after this until you get a proper diagnosis!
