Do men taking part worry you?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I came to this group hoping for information and encouragement. I have found it a rather silent group. Perhaps I arrived at a quiet time. I hope it is not because I am a man. Men do get the same problem. Not many. Some by nature, others as the result of therapy. Like the ladies, we have much to learn and fears to calm.

No way is it because you are a man - we love men!!!!  I'm new to the group too.  I suppose there's not so much to say about osteoporosis as about arthritis, PMR, fibromyalgia, etc. I'm sure if you have a particular problem someone will be able to give you some advice.

Hello George,  I must admit I have been rather silent on these fora for a while because I've just been so busy and preoccupied.  For my part, I don't mind at all men taking part, in fact I'm glad to see that some do.  I'm quite sure that other ladies don't mind either.  I hope that you will get responses to your posts in future.  Take care,  Stefania

    Hi George.

I only joined this group yesterday but I certainly do not have a problem with men. I have so much to ask others and will share this soon.

Hello George, I'm sure there is no issue about you being a man. This forum is a valuable resource but sadly underused. You could phone the NOS helpline staffed by specialist nurses which I have found very helpful.

Also to let you know about another discussion forum that I discovered - NOF- National Osteoporosis Foundation - the US equivalent to the UK's NOS -hosts a discussion forum called 'Inspire' which has a worldwide membership and is extensively used. I have found this forum very supportive and informative on all issues related to osteoporosis.

    Good luck

      Dear Carol,

Thank you very much for that helpful information.Given the number of fractures a year I was unprepared for the group to be under used. I shall persue my researches better armed. Although  am not in immediate danger it would be a pity in a couple of years to find that I have been doing the wrong things or missing the opportunity to do helpful things.

I had asked one of the Macmillan nurses about exercise classes specifically for bone strengthening. She knew of none. Now I know where to ask.

Thank you again. I am glad the reason was not to do with a man trespassing in a ladiy's preserve.

Hello again George. Pilates is excellent for osteoporosis but there are certain exercises that you need to avoid (eg. Forward flexions and spinal twists) Check the exercise 'discussions' part of the NOF 'inspire'forum - there are DVD'S recommended which are aimed specifically at those with osteoporosis. Personally, I prefer to work in a small class where you can be corrected by the teacher but the DVDs are great as a back up once you feel more confident in your practice.

    All the best

Thank you Carol. That is most helpful. I will look for a local Pilates teacher and see what she says about bone thinning and osteoporosis.
