Do vision side effects from Prednisone disappear after going off the drug?

I've been on Prednisone since July 2016. Started with 20 mg; 3 months later restarted at 40 mg; am now at 10 mg and tapering. I have blurred vision; can read only for limited periods and have to squint frequently to focus. Expected tapering would reduce these side effects, but so far not.

I really believe we expect our bodies to keep abreast of modern trends as in..
we can get a meal in minutes from takeaway shops etc, and we don't have enough patience with our wonderful bodies.
If you cut yourself, there is a healing regime that kicks in, and if we break a bone, we have to wait for it to knit etc....
And so it's the same with our immune system.
Give it time, nourish yourself with water, no soft drinks or smoking or takeaway foods.
Your body is a temple, worship it with all the good things.
Our eyesight does fail due to age and other co-morbidities as well, your optometrist can give you more info.

Wise words, jean. Keeping a good distance from prepared foods, soft drinks, sugary things and red meat while consuming plenty of water is certainly a good idea, but alas, its not always easy to do. I am allergic to Monosodium Glutamate which can be concealed in so many ways, as well as sulfites, nitrites, nitrates and numerous other chemicals. Our immune systems are assaulted daily by the deterioration of fabrics, carpeting and various synthetic materials---all of which is airborne. I would bet that plenty of people have allergies that just havent' been identified or they haven't made the connection. I think that's especially true of MSG which is generally labeled as "natural flavoring". It can also be in "hydrolyzed protein" and "hydrolyzed yeast". And beware of "no msg added". And Chinese restaurants. And almost any food from a chain restaurant that tastes good and is too salty.
Our immune systems hardly have a chance to recover before the next assault.
Most importantly, we all need to be vigilant.

What's the name of the book?
The problems caused by overuse of antibiotics are indisputable.

I did not realise that eyes could be a problem if you do not have GCA. About AUG 16 my eyes deteriorated quickly - the Specialist said it was early onset cataracts due to Pred.
They operated on both eyes, a week apart in January. The first op went extremely well. I could see brilliantly - I no longer needed my glasses for distance or close up ( Iv'e had them for years). I was sooo excited - I would no longer get fogged up glasses when my chubby head overheated.
The second op went extremely well a week after. Next morning I had 20/20 vision in both eyes. So excited again.
?Then deterioration set in - anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. They haven't blamed Poly tho. They say I am in the 10% who just get complications.
?Looking through glass is all distorted. Then blurriness comes and goes. Sight is so inconsistent. Some times i can read close up, but not always. It is the same with distance sight. And then there is now my extremely droopy eyelids which shade half my vision? a Jack Nicholson lookalike !
?I was hoping the Eye Specialist would be able to fix my probs - but maybe not.

Your vision difficulties are shocking. Don't know if you've had other opinions, but in this case, I would certainly get them. Eyesight is much too important to do anything less than everything you can. Be not afraid to be a squeaky wheel---its your quality of life at stake!!!

@ Flutterbie57:
It's been a few months since you posted this, but I was searching for info on Prednisone and visions issues and came across this website. I thought I'd respond--
Wondering how your eyes are now, of course. But also wanted to ask whether you were still on Prednisone at the time of your cataract surgeries, or if maybe you hadn't been off very long? Prednisone suppresses the immune system and also impairs the body's ability to heal, so it could be that the Prednisone in large part caused your complications. How long after the surgery did the complications start?
I hope it has resolved by now! Our vision is such a precious gift. I'm struggling with mine right now and just praying it's the Prednisone causing the odd effects I'm having in my vision.
Good luck!

I'm seeing your post five months after you posted it, but wondering if you are now off Prednisone and if your vision issues resolved at all? I've been on Prednisone since 5/2/17, and I was put on it as a safety measure in case I had a certain condition that involved vision, but they now don't think I have that--though they aren't sure. My highest dose was 60mg, I'm now tapered to 20mg. I can say that my vision has had continuous issues since starting the Prednisone, but I'm not sure it's the Pred causing my issues because I don't know that it could cause the things I'm experiencing. I have blurry vision at times and major dry eye, which I do think are the Prednisone, and my left eye has developed an astigmatism, which I also think could be the Prednisone. But the other visual disturbances I'm having that I'm not sure Prednisone could cause are light sensitivity, issues with processing certain types of light, diminished night vision, and peripheral vision loss/issues. I'm not sure if Prednisone can cause these things. I do have eye exams weekly right now as I'm tapering, and despite continued vision issues, the eye doctors have never found any cause for it, and I've had some extensive testing.
Did you experience any of this? I'm praying it's the Prednisone and that it will resolve at lower doses and once I'm off.

I did suffer from most of the same problems as you except for the peripheral vision, and those problems have all settled down. I have been around 10mg for a long time.

I starting experiencing vision problems as well and I knew it had to do with the prednisone. And when I started prednisone I was already pre-diabetic. I am now diabetic but my numbers have never been particularly high. Especially not 600. My highest A1C ever was only a 6.7. My blood sugars are very much under control now that I take metformin but I still have vision problems. My vision has not improved even though I am now down to only 6 mg. But I also suffer from Sjogren's Syndrome and my eye doctor and I think that my dry eyes is what's actually causing my vision problems. I am happy that yours has improved.

What kind of visual problems? What does your doctor say? Are you sure it is prednisone effects and not GCA? If they get worse please go to emergency and make sure they know you are taking pred for PMR.
You could also consider posting this comment on a different forum. This thread is four years old and unlikely to be seen by many people, if anyone. Go to HealthUnlocked, the PMRGCAuk community where you will find a lot of fellow-sufferers. This Patient forum used to be great but some ill-advised technical changes a few years ago chased away nearly all the users.
