do you eat when you have diarrhoea?

sound stupid but i just wondered what others do.

when you have diarrhoea do you bother eating or do you fast?

i've had two bouts of D. that have lasted a month each, and i try not eating but it gets to the stage im worried i'll pass out so i just eat plain things like crackers/ricecakes/bread.

when i have the odd episode i never know what to do, especially if i have to go out or to work - eat and possibly have to go more or not eat and risk fainting?

i dont want to take immodium all the time but feel better going out if ive taken it

    Hello leeniepie,

It isn't a stupid question at all. I have IBS with both C and D, so hopefully I can help. I think the first thing to do would be to find out what is triggering it, might be worth seeing a doctor as that is an awful long period to have D for. I had it for 6 weeks before I was diagnosed with IBS, and although I found the diagnosis hard I started recording what I ate and what was a trigger for me. I now have a few bad days a month, when I do use immodium if I am out, however, it is so much better. Secondly, yes you must eat, but you are right you should stick to plain foods. I always find that bananas, porridge, plain pasta, plain rice with plain chicken and lean protein tend to be safe foods (but as I hinted earlier you might need to experiment as to which foods are safe for you as everyone is different). Definitely do not think you have to put up with this though, seek medical advice.

my dr's ran tests to check for food poisoning but thats it. i have been diagnosed with IBS for 8 years though i actually had gastritis and chronic dyspepsia for the majority of that, the IBS only started 4 1/2 years ago. I used to be IBS-C with very bad flatulance and bloating, which the FODMAP diet help enormously with, along with regular laxatives. then last august i had diarrhoea for a month when i had never had it before, and since then i have odd episodes of it now and again, sometimes two in a week sometimes none for a month or so. this february i had it for then whole month again.

i have kept a food diary for the last 5 years and thought i had everything fine with FODMAP and things i could tollerate, but with the D there are no triggers. i've had it even after eating things that i know are fine normally.

i've just taken to carrying immodium in every handbag i own
