The truth? Your doctor sounds incompetent. How can antibiotics be subscribed when they don't know what kind of bacteria there is or even IF there is bacteria.I would get a new doctor. Have you taken your temperature? Go the Emergency Room or one of those walk-in doctors (if there is one where you live). Get a culture done on your urine. If no leukoctyes, nitrates, or blood showed up on the dipstick, and only protein, that doesn't sound like a UTI.

i agree, upon getting home i realised actually she didnt take my temperature or blood pressure or anything just dipped the urine, its made me more anxious to be honest as i have no idea what it could be, i know i have read that sometimes UTIs dont show on some urine tests hopefully it clears over the next few days, if not i will be back to see a different doctor, have you had those symptoms befote and it turned out to be something else? thank you for your reply

To have protein in urine does not mean UTI at all, but kidney problem if it appears more than trivial. The UTI is marked by leukoctyes that should have been found at the same time when protein was tested. Your symptoms looked more like UTI. Antibiotics can help that. The symptoms of the UTI vary with the different ages. When you are young, it just appears urine pain and urgency, but when you get old, these symptoms would be replaced with digestive problems like abdominal bloating and nausea, and neurological problems of foggy brain and heavy legs. Also it is easy to turn to chronic UTI, which means it relapses after it is cleared with antibiotics. When you are not young, you may need to improve your immune system to fight against the chronic UTI. You can also buy some test kits to observe if you have UTI or not. You should be really pay very good attention to UTI because it can cause a lot of complications. Good luck!

i am only 26 do you think it still could be a UTI with the symptoms? did you say kidney infections show protein in the urine? thank you

It's true that there can be a UTI and not have positive on dip stick. However, with the extreme symptoms you have, I would expect to see high leuks. In any case, doctor should have sent the specimen off for culture.

Lzhan is correct that Protein if it's high points to a kidney issue.

so it could possibly be a kidney infection that could clear up with antibiotics? regardless im giving it until monday and going back i think its just to settle my anxiety over it for the weekend.

    Chelsea,

If you are only 26, you should have the UTI only. UTI is the infection in the lower part of the urinary tract while the kidney infection is in the upper part. Usually, it is not easy to get the kidney infection unless with serious immune problem. Your doctor said that you have only a slight of protein. It could occur with the pure UTI. Also if you have kidney infection, the typical symptom is that the pain in the middle back near the spine as well as high fever. Complete the antibiotics and you should clear off the UTI.

However, the UTI could recur. Once one get the UTI's haunt, it would be a nightmare for the life. Be careful. Drinking a lot of water and don't eat any sugar or candies.

    Good luck!

No doctor should ever prescribe antibiotics 'just in case'. This is why the world is hovering on the brink of antibiotic disaster as so many bugs are becoming resistant.

Having said that, since you are taking them, make sure you also take probiotics of some sort (live yoghurt will do) as the antibiotic will mess up your natural good bugs - you could end up with thrush (took me years to work out why I always got thrush straight after a UTI!) or bad guts or something.

Also, it pays to know which antibiotic you are taking. There is a huge difference between the various types so never accept "an antibiotic" without finding out more about what type it is.

Hope it all clears up soon.
