Doctors are not investigating further. What should I do?

Hello, I am 22 years old. I have been suffering with irregular periods since they first started when I was 14/15. Last month I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary syndrome after being sent to the hospital for a scan. I was then sent to see a gynaecologist, hoping that they would be able to have a look and check down below out. However when we got to the question of 'have you had intercourse,' and I answered, 'never' I was told that no investigation would be carried out as the hymen is still intact. I left feeling yet again as if on one wants to help me out, despite me having all the same symptoms my mother had 3 years ago, when she was rushed in after being diagnosed with cancer of the womb after her being fobbed of on several occasions.

I am starting to worry now as the periods are getting out of control and no one seems to want to help. They are only telling me different things which is not helping.

What should I do?

Thank you

My daughter has the same problem as you. She's the same age and same circumstances. She was diagnosed with PCOS 7 years ago and when she read the leaflets from the GP recognised the same symptoms that I had (although I'd never been diagnosed) Looking back,my mum & grandma and aunties and nieces all have traces of it.. PCOS is a syndrome and has many symptoms, greater or lesser in different people. I've found that GPs aren't very "clued up" about PCOS. Most help is given if you're trying to conceive (PCOS makes this difficult) You may get some help if you ask your GP to refer you to an endocrinologist..I do under stand your frustration at feeling that no one wants to help you. With hindsight, over the years, many symptoms I've been to doctors with could have been explained if I'd been diagnosed earlier. I wish you well. PCOS is complex and my daughter & myself found help and understanding on a website called Verity. Btw,her period problems greatly improved when she lost weight~her "puppy fat" really. Her main problem now is acne~another PCOS symptom.

Hello, i am also 22 years of age. I started my period when i was 9years old and my they were extremely irregular and unpredictable! Sometimes i would have 4days a month without bleeding, sometimes i didnt bleed atall!! When i hit 13 i was constantly doubled in pain, went back and forwards to the doctors/hospital and everyone just ignored me. Keep pestering, or when you next have a severe flare up get straight to a&e.

When i was 18 i had a miscarraige and was sent to hospital to check if i had passed it all. While i was there i asked if they could check me ovaries... only then they discovered i had suffered from PCOD since i was 13. After all the years off pain i was in, they wouldnt listen. Blood tests were done and came back clear, said i didnt have PCOD but they were there!

I personallt found being on the pill helped with the pain for a period of time (i asked for the pill at 13 but didnt start intercorse till 16) i also found co-codamol was helpful. Also a hotwater bottle on ur belly and your back. Regular long soaks in a hot bath helps too.

I was told i would never be able to have children as i had 4losses all in all. But i now have a 6week old daughtwer!! :-)

Moral of the story is hun, dont give up, keep on their backs! They will eventually to do something! I hope you have more luck very soon, i know its horrible.

    Good luck xx

My daughter, now 18, was diagnosed 4 years ago (mainly by me). She happened to have a scan of her bowel and I asked them to check her ovaries and while her left ovary looks normal, the right one is covered in cysts. Blood tests of hormone levels have fluctuated from normal to elevated androgen (finally! after they did a test when she wasn't on the Pill).

My daughter had very heavy bleeding at 14, but over the last 2 years has hardly had a period unless she's on the Pill (which forces a bleed). I would suggest you chat to your GP about going on the Pill, even if you are not sexually active, as it does regulate the hormonal system and lessen the bleeding. If you can persuade your GP a referral to an Endocrinologist would be great (these people look after the hormonal system) but unless you are trying for a baby, in my experience the NHS does not want to know - it's very frustrating. Do go and have a look at Verity who are a forum and source of useful info on PCOS.

Don't be fobbed off - keep going back and insist they help you.

    Best wishes,

    Fay

I'm 21 and my periods haven't been right since I had my first one they have always been spaced out, I consulted with a doctor every 6months or so and the have been adamant that it was just down to my age and they shrugged me of saying my periods would get closer together as I get older and now 3weeks away from my 22nd birthday and I’ve not had one in 24months. My partner and I both went in to see my doctor and had to lie and say we were trying to conceive for them to take my concerns seriously, that was back in April 2013 and we have been waiting 4months to be told what I had already consider it to be PCOS, my ovaries are covered in cysts.

You need to force them to take your concerns seriously even if you find a close male friend and do what I did...we lied and I feel so guilty about it but then I think if I hadnt they would of just fodded me off yet again. you should make appointment after appointment PCOS if something that needs to be addressed...my current situation is they think my partner and I are trying for a baby and they have offered me a drug that will help me ovulate and I now have to decide whether I want to have kids now or risk the chances of leaving it too late..lucky for me my partner is very understanding and has held my hand through the whole odeal and is willing to start a family if I chose I don't want to wait...

Please Please Please dont let them fob you off like they did to me this is serious and you need to look at the bigger picture this can and will effect your decissions for the rest of you life.

Thank you all for your replies. Doctors are not going to investigate further and have stuck me on Cerelle (mini pill).

Do any of you know if this drug is suitable for Vegans?

I have researched but there is not much info about the contents of the drug just repeats of what it does and how it works.

Forgot to put Desogestrel after Cerelle.

I'm really glad I came across this post. I am 20 years old and the beginning of this year I was taken to the ER for a ruptured 5cm cyst in my right ovary. I was referred to a gynecologist, a male and I absolutely hated it. However, he was the only doctor that offered surgery to me.Unfortunately, the type of surgery he offered was very drastic. He wanted to take both my ovaries out completely, and I did not want to do that because I do wish to have kids later on in life.

After him, I saw my mother's gynecologist for a second opinion. Since then, I have gotten two sonograms because my pain has never subsided. If anything, it has gotten worse. My first check up sonogram was in April, I had cysts in my cervix. The doctor proceeded to tell me I was "fine". Then my most recent sonogram in September now showed I have multiple cysts. And just my luck, in BOTH of my ovaries. Whoever checked my sonograms said there is a concern for PCOS. I'm just as frustrated as you are because the current gynecologist seems to not give a care about how I'm feeling. After these results she called me again to tell me that I am "normal". Im no doctor, but how is she going to tell me I'm normal but the sonograms show the complete opposite? She put me on birth control, which has dramatically helped my periods but not helping the pain, or excess hair growth I developed along my chin&neckline. I'm extremely frustrated and becoming quite depressed over it. I feel like doctors these days don't care.

    Hi, I feel you guys.

    I'm also suffering from PCOS.

And this year, I'm going to try my doctor's advice in treating the PCOS naturally.

I've done all my research and crossfinger, hope this PCOS diet will be worth it.

    I'll do my grocery tomorrow.

I decide to blog it, so that if ever this will work for me, it might work for others also.

I'll post my day by day experience, meals, track all my activities, etc and see if my condition is going to improve (hopefully) within this year.

If you have time, kindly follow and read my blog.

    thank you.
