Doctors so dismissive due to my health anxiety

I had pneumonia 6 months ago and never received any follow up X-rays to make sure all clear . When I got healthier that was it . I still get a burning in my back that I feel might be from the lungs and I feel I can't breath as deep as I used to . My doctor listened to my chest and says white blood count good that's it . I feel worried that maybe something was missed or maybe it wasn't pneumonia. I am starting to wonder if like my doctor thinks I'm really just crazy or if I should switch doctors .  Does any one else feel like doctors just don't bother since they know you over think ?

    Hi,

Yes I think my Dr is too quick to put everything down to my anxiety.

I have also thought of changing Drs, I've been seeing the same one for over 25years!

If you feel that something isn't right get a second opinion.

Yes it could be overthinking and anxiety but you know your own body.

Yeah they dismiss alot of things. I get hot flashes and they blame it on my hormones and they didn't even check me just to make sure it was true. sad I have that problem too I thought it was a rib injury. Since it happened right after a rib incident. I would take shallow breaths to avoid the pain it hurt to breathe deeply. I couldn't move too much either. The breathing deeply pain still keeps coming back I don't know why... If they are not listening to you switch Doctor. You did have pneumonia. That was real. They should not be dismissing everything only because you have Anxiety. 😑It could be a real problem. 🙌

    Good Luck & Take Care👍

Yes, it's sort of a case of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", I think.  I've found my concerns being quickly dismissed in the past due to health anxiety.

I recently had to go to the ER, I was having a very bad panic attack that had me hyperventilating, dizzy, and with an elevated pulse.  The physician saw I was on some medications for anxiety, and basically what I told him was: "I do have anxiety disorder and panic attacks, but what I'm currently feeling is much different from what I'm used to experiencing."  In this instance, I was taken very seriously, the doctor was very kind, and he ran all kinds of tests checking my heart, blood, organ function, etc.  He also gave me an IV of an anti-anxiety agent, because I told him that the medication I normally take did nothing to alleviate my symptoms, which is why I was suspecting it could be something more dire.  I was very impressed and happy with the experience, because I've had times I've been in the ER a few times before, and the doctors would just give me the standard ECG/apirin/troponin/dimer/chest scan, and quickly send me on my way.

If you have symptoms you think could be serious, sometimes you need to be a bit persistent in explaining that what you're going through is new (if it is).  Also, if you think it could be something serious and your doctor isn't giving it the attention you'd like, you can always seek a second opinion.  Never hesitate to get a second opinion if you can, it doesn't mean you have to stop seeing your primary provider.

Hi if your pneumonia hadn't cleared up your doctor would have had crackling sounds and also your white blood cell count would have been low so an X Ray wasn't needed.I don't think your doctor was being dismissive.Extra tests are not always necessary.

Sorry white blood cells would be raised.

I can relate to this so much right now. I've been to my doctors five times in the last month and a half and have only seen my doctor twice out of those visits. I believe this is because everyone in my doctors office knows I have an anxiety disorder so they are quick to dismiss any thing I come in for as anxiety. This week I didn't even see an actual doctor they only let me see a nurse cause I had come in already so many times. I have been in three times because I feel something is wrong inside my head as I am constantly lightheaded, off balance have vision problems and what feels like fluid in my ears but I'm just told its my anxiety, no test have been done just checked my blood pressure. I know that I should trust my doctor but its difficult when you feel as though you are just being dismissed as "just anxiety". I sometimes feel that doctors don't understand exactly how bad "just anxiety" can be, it makes me feel so hopeless sometimes.

If your concerned you can always go to the hospital to ensure all is well. Hopefully you will have more luck then I have in my journey with anxiety.
