Does anyone else deal with nausea or IBS symptoms?

Posted , 3 users are following.

This is my third round of CFS. Each time the symptoms vary a little bit, but always have the draining fatigue. I also have loss of appetite until I start to get better. I have to make myself eat some days. I eat Activia yogurt and take  a daily probiotic to try to keep my stomach issues under control and hopefully  build up my immune system. Any other ideas or input would be appreciated.

A lot of people with CFS/ME have stomach issues and loss of appetite. I took digestive enzymes, which helped. Also, when I had a loss of appetite, soups helped me get the nutrition I needed and were somehow easier for me than solid food. If you have enough energy, juicing with veggies and fruit can be very nutritious. I now have the opposite problem--I'm overweight for the first time in my life!

    Hi Chloe

i have had CFS for 2years now,I had to give up a very good job because of it. I  am worn out all the time I may only get 1 or 2 days in a week that I feel half normal and can get out.  I also have a no appetite, I have just had 9 days of my IBS and have lost 12 pounds this time,so between the 2 I seem to be ill all the time.  Some times because I canot get out and about like I use to life becomes very lonely, like you I have to make myself eat but some times just looking at the food makes me feel sick.

i also have fibromyalgia so I get a lot of pain in my muscles.

    hope this helps.

To Deb and Chloe: I, too had nausea and loss of appetite. I lost a lot of weight. Those symptoms eventually passed. There's every chance those symptoms will pass for you, too. Actually, acupuncture did help. You should look into it. Acupuncture is known, for instance, to help cancer patients with nausea from chemotherapy.

      Hi Deb,

This is such a restrictive disease that I feel like my life is being robbed of precious time. I am hoping for a remission soon. I can no longer work so I think I am going to look at applying for disability. Some days are worse than others. I have been so sick from it that if I ate anything solid I would gag while I was eating it. Eating yougurt or eating soup was my best choice as all I had to do was swallow it. I have heard many people talk about acupuncture but have heard it is expensive and I don't have the money to pursue that avenue right now. I take probiotics for my IBS issues and that seems to help somewhat. There is certainly no miracle cure and I for one am really tired of being tired........

    Hi,

Nausea and irritable bowel like symptoms such as wind/bloating and abdominal pain. This is reported in 60-70% of cases.

If IBS type symptoms are a problem, follow the diet advice for IBS symptoms. If you have nausea (feel sick), try snacking on starchy foods, eating little and often, and sipping drinks slowly. If this doesn't work, and your symptoms are particularly severe, you may be offered drugs to control the nausea.

Certain foods do seem to exacerbate symptoms but there is no one food group affecting everybody. Common offenders are wheat, dairy products, peppers and onions. Alcohol and caffeine drinks can also be a problem. Reduction or withdrawal of suspect foods should be tried in rotation of around four weeks at a time, to test each food group.

Many find small meals and snacks are helpful. It might be worth trying to add in some slow release or low GI carbohydrates such as pasta, porridge, wholegrain cereals to help energy levels.

Other therapies include herbs such as mint, ginger and chamomile and I have also seen some people’s gut symptoms respond to massage, acupuncture and homoeopathy.

IBS treatments don't generally conflict with FMS/ME/CFS treatments, and the focus on a healthy diet can be beneficial to your overall health. If you are planning to try one, your health-care professional should get advice from a dietitian.

Treatment is based on symptom relief using anti-spasmodic. While laxatives and constipating agents can be bought at chemists, this can become expensive and one should see GP for regular prescription.
