Does anyone else with Fibro use a walking stick?

I was diagnosed with Fibro last year and since then my symptoms have just gotten worse! After I have been sat for a short while and try to get up I cannot straighten my back for a while and literally have to walk hunched over. I also experience pain when I'm walking so for those reasons I am considering a walking stick but I don't want to look silly or for it to seem like I am trying to make a spectacle of myself. I am only 24 so I don't want people to look and think I am strange or being attention seeking. I am leaning towards getting one if only for inside the house because I think it would help me. Does anyone else use one? Does it help?

hi princess....i absolutely use a cane when i am out with someone and when i am out alone or at the mall i use a walker! i find i can walk normally with the  walker for awhile then the baby steps set in and i know it is time to stop for the day.

i have had fibro for about 15 years, but i am seeing a neurologist as well because i have gotten progressively worse, with, hand feet cramping, fasciculations, numbness and tingling . i was tested for  MS that's how bad it is...NO MS! but believe me any help we do for ourselves is a must...the drs. are not in our bodies, they really don't know even though they see many pts. good luck

Funny you should mention that because I also suffer with numbness in my arms and legs and hands and feet and experience a lot of tingling and cramping as well. I haven't been tested for MS and I haven't wanted to bring it up with my GP because I am very self conciouss of sounding like a hypochondriac but I have been referred to a physiotherapist so maybe I will ask them.

I understand, I turned 21 recently and also was testered for MS. Life is hard, I used to play violin and now I bearly play the pain in my lower back, kneck and shoulders prevents me.

I recenly baught a cane, I havent used it in public yet, I'll be honest, it's embarresing. I cant walk far with out it, my legs start to wobble and I fall, I cant hold my younger cousins (their todlers / infants) I feel like such a weakling.

    Hi princessemh89,

Has your G.P suggested putting you on any med's. I'm on Amitriptyline, 10mg's, Butrans patches, 20mgs, & Kapak, 15/500 mgs. If I did'nt my pain relief, I could'nt move sweetheart. Also I have refered back to Physio as well, no harm going back to your G.P, sweetheart. I'm 44 yrs of age, go back to your G.P, & get sorted. I've a daugther at 25, I would tell her the same thing, honey. :-) Good Luck xox

      Hi,

Yes I am on Amitriptyline 30mg, Pregabalin 400mg, Codeine, and Paracetamol and without taking all of them an hour before I go to sleep I cannot sleep and I toss and turn all night with pain. I have also been referred to a Physio but haven't had an appointment yet, I am waiting for one to be sent in the mail smile

      Hi terig,

No I haven't gained weight. I am overweight currently which doesn't help (need to lose about 50 pounds) but I have actually lost 10 pounds recently when I changed to diet drinks and started eating a little healthier and before that the Pregabalin didn't put weight on me that I am aware of. I have started walking my dog most days for about a half hour (which I pay for dearly later in the day) usually at night I have terrible leg aches and pains and I can't sleep very well.

    Hi

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with fibro, when you say you get pains when you walk, is it chest pain? I feel when i try to walk a short distance i get severe chest pains and pains in my neck and back as if i am trying to drag a weight with me, ive never used a stick im 49 and keep trying to carry on, i still work full time, but this illniss is getting me down to the point that i dont know if it is fibro, dont no if it has made me more anxious but ive confinced my self its more sinister, i randomly Vom and keep getting upper tummy pains, i have had a pain in my ear for weeks that will not budge, up during the night coughing, have continues pain all over all the time. Do other people have these random pains and vom, I keep putting it down to all the medication I have to take, as also diabetic and have high blood pressure and various vitemins low, and low iron, im sorry that I have winged a bit, but i feel like i cant cope with this any more and dont even no now if it is fibro.

Hi I to have to walk with a walking stick at times. I also have a walker aswell I'm only in my early 40's it is so embarrassing having to use a walker at my age but I also know that if I didn't have it to use I would be screwed. It's great my walker as it has a seat on it so if I get tired or am in to much pain I can just sit down and have a breather. And that is on good days where I can get out of bed. So don't be to freaked at having to use disability AIDS as fibro is debilitating and you would be lost without them.
