Does anyone get severe gas pain with IBS?

I was diagnosed with IBS over 20 years ago. For the past 15 years I get severe gas pain and bloating to where I'm doubled over and can't do anything to get comfortable. The gas seems to get trapped and won't come out. I've been to different doctors and have had sigmoidoscopies, colonoscopies, scans, etc. The doctor gave me hyoscyamine, but it does nothing for the pain. I've tried heating pads, GasX, Tylenol, Motrin, Mylanta. Nothing helps. I'm desperate. I am going into my 19th hour of pain. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried Windeze or bicarbonate of soda fpr gas? I also find milk helps with this too. Hyoscyamine works great for me along with Buscopan.  There are other antispasmodics on the market that your doctor could suggest.  Sometimes you need to try several.

I haven't tried those. I wish the hyoscyamine worked for me. Thank you for the suggestions.

Sorry I made a mistake and meant to say that hyoscyamine works for me along with Nurofen. Buscopan is the same thing as hyoscyamine!  Hope you can get some relief.

Bummer. If it's the same as hyoscyamine then chances are it won't work for me. Thank you though!

It is the same; what a nuisance if it isn’t going to work!  Buscopan is actually a very mild antispasmodic and some people need a stronger medication for their IBS.  I find more potent meds upset my stomach, so I have to get milder ones.

Hopefully you can find something else.

I found diet is the only cure for me. are you following the Fodmap diet? This has helped massively and I can tell if I have eaten something which can produce gas as I feel pain and bloating.

I haven't heard of that diet. I'll look it up. I have a feeling that diet is going to be the only thing that helps me too. Thanks!

There are 2 things you could try. Omeprazole and Buscopan. You can buy Buscopan oer the counter and  if you find it works you can get it on prescription. Hope it helps.

For IBS you can also buy Colpermin over the counter and again get it on prescription if you find it helps.

Take care and keep in touch

I used to be on Omeprazole but it didn't help. I haven't heard of the others you mentioned. I'll have to try them. At this point I'll try anything. Thanks!

Hi Shellie, I have to agree with Rob on this, Try a low FODMAP diet. You may have a food intolerance and this is one way of weeding it out of your diet. After 2 months you start introducing goods ‘forbidden’ on the diet. Sometimes foods that have caused you problems can be eaten in small amounts eventually. I have IBS & Coeliac disease and was finding that after being off gluten for sometime, other foods started giving me problems, foods like soya, onions, garlic, fruit etc. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose, except your horrible painful symptoms.

Oh boy, that's horrible.  Have you tried chlordiazepoxide clidinium caps, it's a prescription my doctor gave me for the cramps and urgency of  my IBS.  I tried all the over the counter GasX, etc. and they do not work.   Don't use malanga either, if you need that type of help, use Gaviscon, sometimes it helps with gas.  I don't like Mylanta, I think it causes gas.  Anyway, ask your doctor about the capsules I take, see what she or he says. Perhaps something you are eating often is adding to your situation. I know when i eat too much bread, and I love bread, and too much veggies....the gas gets bad. Also, it doesn't help that I am a soda drinker, Coke is my drink of choice and I can't stop....sigh.

I haven't heard of that medication. I'll have to ask my doctor about it. My problem isn't cramping though. It's stabbing pain. I can't seem to pinpoint it to any certain foods. This is the first attack I've had since August.

I tried hyoscyamine when I had my first UC attack (I also have IBS), it was one of the prescriptions that I was given and it didn't work for me.  I see in reading other replies that FODMAP diet came up. My doctor always says, "eat white" when I get bad. Follow FODMAP.  It does help but I hate doing it. It's so frustrating.  But the chlordiazepoxide clidinium caps do help help with all the pain, so try it if your doctor will agree to give it to you.  Let me know how you do!

Does that medication cause side effects. I'm always so scared of that. Thank you!

Check with a pharmacist if you are taking any other medication, as it is not always compatible.

I have a real fright of taking any meds because I am hypersensitive. I have list of meds on my allergic list that is ridiculous because of reactions. I don't blame you  for being concerned about taking meds. I have had no reactions to the chlordiazepoxide clidinium caps.  I was worried about taking them myself but I am ok with them.  You just have to be careful about how much you take because they can constipate you because they slow things down. But honestly, they help with the intestinal cramps, diarrhea, etc.  Side effects are all relative to the person who takes the meds. We all react differently. That being said, I'd give them a try.

Very true. It is different for everyone. I will mention it to my doctor. It's worth a try. At this point I'll try anything.
