Does anyone suffer from LPR (Silent Reflux)?

Oh, my goodness. I don't know if this is another lovely perimenopause symptom (I feel like I've had them all!) but it could easily be the worst. I've been dealing with it off-and-on since I started peri (about 18 months ago; I just turned 45) and usually a round of Nexium takes care of it. This bout is worse than any I've had. I haven't slept much this week, as the cough/scratchy throat/phlegm/gagging wakes me every hour or so. I'm doing Nexium in the morning and Zantac right before bed and neither is helping. I've just started taking Tums after eating, too. I hate popping all these pills.

Also, is there a correlation between LPR and your cycles? I still get a period for a few months, then I'll skip one, then have one for a few months before skipping another. I am due to get my period on Monday (if it comes on time) and my last bout of LPR was a week or so before my period in June.

I haven't been very good about adjusting my diet, as all the things they say to avoid are my favorites (tomatoes, onions, spicy food, chocolate, alcohol). I know I need to be more proactive in that area, and I could probably stand to lose 10 pounds.

Guess I'm just looking for someone else to say they deal with this, too!

Yes, I have suffered from LPR for years. So many mistaken it for gerd or acid reflux because those who don't have it don't understand it. For me it is worse. I don't know if mine was because of perimenopause or what. But it has been much better over the last few years. I am postmenopause 2 years (in Oct) I do manage mine mainly with alkaline water. That has been a game changer for me. and I recommend it. That and avoiding trigger foods. Tomatoes, onions, chocolate and acidic foods. Also taking so much of your tums and antacids can be making your symptoms worse or not help to be honest. I have a prescription for )meprazole (prilosec) but it really doesn't help LPR but relieves heart burn/pain from eating the wrong foods lol.

I have eat the wrong foods more than I should and I suffered for it. Constantly needing to clear my throat, waking up in the morning with horrible mucous and when really bad the coughing. Also when I eat to many sweet things or chocolate it gives me breast tenderness/pain.

I need to lose a lot more than 10 lbs. 😉

    Hang in there!

I was told I had silent reflux a few years ago after a long sore throat. I completely adjusted my diet, no sugar, alcohol, gluten, dairy, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated drinks, fruit except bananas. I lost 30 pounds in a few short months. Long story short I never even had reflux. It was the start of peri.

One thing I can suggest is that you try and get your stomach alkaline. Warm water with 1/2 a lemon squeezed in, first thing in the morning before eating anything else.

Antacids are the worse as they will leave you with rebound acid. Cut out the worse offenders like caffeine, spicy foods. Sleep on a wedge or prop your mattress up at your head

interesting...ive had a sore throat now for 4 going in 5 months. went to the Dr fearing the worst, she said stress. I Don't feel stressed although the sore throat and Web MD are a worriers nightmare. after reading up on many different things globus sensation and perimenopause and perhaps silent reflux I'm thinking could be the combination of all of my sore throat. the only other symptom I have is strange real like dreams that leave me shaken and sweating with rapid heartbeat upon wakening. I had Ablation years ago so with no period since it's hard to tell if it's menopause or Perimenopause. I'm 51. everyone's input is very calming. Thank you

i have suffered from LPR since February. I get a bitter taste in my mouth as well which isnt pleasant! I take slippery elm lozengers which do help to a degree. I am post menopausal and not sure whether my hormones have got anything to do with onset of LPR. I try and avoid triggers but it is difficult to know what does make it worse! I have lost about 14 pounds as a result. Dont want to lose anymore. Have had a barrier swallow to see if i had a hernia but result came back as negative.

My dear, you've just described me with the exception of the alcohol, my diet consists of most of what you mentioned. I am also 45 and my cycle is inconsistent like yours. My Gyn said that I am in the beginning of change. I knew that before she said that. I could have spent the carfare that I used to see her on something else. I also get a lot of heartburn and reflux/gastritis flare ups in and throughout my cycle. It's unfortunately a part of the program.

Hi how is your LPR this week?

Thanks for asking! Interestingly, it's been getting better and better and today, I almost feel back to normal. I have been taking a Nexium (PPI) every morning when I wake up and a Zantac (H2 antagonist) before bed, so I'm sure they're a big part in why it seems to be receding. But, I'm on Day 3 of my cycle today, so is that just a coincidence or not? I will certainly be paying close attention next month to see if the LPR ramps up again before my period and subsides once it starts.

Glad it appears to be getting better. I feel sure mine is meno related! It certainly depends on what i eat and just came from nowhere!
