Does anyone think there is a link between the mirena coil and anxiety

Hi

So I have had a mirena coil for 5 years. It’s basically just ran out of its date for removal and I have an appointment for a removal and reinsertion on 27th November.

I was just wondering if anyone thinks that the hormones that are put into your body through this form of contraception could be linked to anxiety and depression?

I have never had anxiety before and 4 weeks ago a general arm and neck pain that I had been battling for months seems to have triggered the worst anxiety I have ever experienced. I feel like a completely different person. Always in fear and on edge most of the time. I am now 1 week into taking citalopram because my anxiety had made me so unwell. Going through the motions with this whole ordeal as you can imagine, just taking each day as it comes.

What I’m wondering is, do you think it’s worth me maybe having the coil completely removed and not replaced whilst I get over this illness and then once I’m better look into maybe being sterilised or something ( I don’t want anymore children anyway ) or do you think I should just go a head as planned? I’m a little stuck in what’s in my best interest. I just want to get back to the old me.

Hello Sara, I too had the Mirena for about 8 yrs so I was way over the date. But my doctor said if it wasn't bothering me then it was ok. Well I had it removed. I had certain health issues but didn't link it to the contraception until I researched it's side effects. I read other stories of people's issues and they sounded like me. So I would say it's possible that your anxiety is link to your birth control. I mean it's about the the hormones. So I'm not sure of your age but if you are done having kids, try something else. Good luck. I hope you feel better.

Thanks ivy. I’m 32 I have two children already aged 7 and 5 and I am done if I’m being honest. ( I think my partner wouldn’t mind another ) but he understands why we can’t have anymore and does mostly agree with me. We have a boy and a girl so very fortunate. I’ve had no problems with the mirena up until the past year where I have started to slowly experience more anxiety over certain things but it’s always gone away. However this time it hasn’t and has made me ill so I think my body just had to much trauma through illness recently and it triggered the anxiety. I’m thinking I may have it removed and let my body get back into its natural rhythm for a while. I mean I have had a period for so many years. I’ve forgotten what it’s like.

That sounds like a good plan cause you can always insert later on down the line. In my case, I'm married and my husband new he wanted no more after our 2 boys so he agreed to a vasectomy. I told him I had 2 c-sections and surgery wasn't an option for me. Best believe he's a keeper. Lol

      Take care of yourself.

Sorry another question. After having the mirena removed after such a long time. Did you experience any nasty side effects? There is a lot of information in regards to the mirena crash. Lots of women have been bombarded with all sorts of horrendous side effects after having it removed. So obviously I’m a little hesitant?

Would you mind explaining your experience after having it taken out? Did you have any other contraception after or did you just do what I want to do and let your body get back into its natural rhythm?

Hi Sarah, after it was removed which was about almost 2 years ago, it took a little while to get back to myself. I wasnt getting birth control again because I'm 49 and knew kids were not an option. But after my hubby got his procedure we a free to do whatever. Lol

You're still young enough to have more, but if you are done just get your tubes tied. Sex is so much better without the worries.

To answer your question though, my symptoms were my hair falling out more, unmanageable, some headaches, just things I didnt think was caused by the Mirena. But yes definitely let your body heal.
