Does anything really work?

I don't have Fibromyalgia but my sister does. Everything hurts her all the time and now her feet have started to become extremely painful in the mornings. She is a registered nurse so she is on them a lot. She has tired every medication that the doctor has prescribed and nothing has worked. Does anything really work?

Hello. Your sister will need you to encourage her because it can be very difficult to suffer pain all of the time everywhere, and without someone who really cares one feels very isolated. I have had fibromyalgia for many years, but was diagnosed less than one year ago. I think I have tried most of the pain medications and nothing worked until I saw the doctor at the pain clinic at the hospital. I was taking morphine when I saw her and was in constant pain, unable to walk or sleep or get out of bed unaided. She prescribed Oxycontin and said it was the only drug that was effective for controlling the pain of fibrolyalgia. I take 30 mg twice each day, with 1000 mg of paracetemol. Most of the time now the pain is under control, but during the night I take 10 mg of oxynorm if the pain in my hips prevents me from sleeping. For the past 4 months I have been having intravenous perfusions of Ketamine. The first time I spent 5 days in hospital, but now I have the treatment at home for 3 days each month, and nurses come twice a day. I don't have any bad side effects from the Oxycontin or the Ketamine, and my pain is so much better. I still don't sleep for more than 2 hours at a time without being awakened by pain in my hips and knees, but during the day I can do most things now without too much trouble. I do still often suffer with painful ankles when I walk (they feel as though they are broken) especially  in damp weather . I haven't found a solution for that, but overall the treatment I have is very helpful. I hope your sister gets effective pain relief soon. It will be difficult to continue her work with the pain and also the extreme fatigue that accompanies fibromyalgia. My thoughts are with you both.

Hi Julia.. what you described just sounds horrible and I am so sorry that you go through this 24/7. Unfortunately since my sister is a nurse she can't have anything that will make her drowsy or alter her decision making. I guess that's why it's so hard for her to get any relief from pain. I thank you for your comment. I wish you all the peace and pain relief in the world Julia!
