Does Menopause make things worse

Posted , 6 users are following.

i had my last period at the beginning of the year and although I'm happy to see the back of them I have since had numerous flare ups and the itching has been ridiculous, it has me demented through the night. Has anyone else had the same experience.

Hi Hazel. Not that it helps you but my LS only started once my periods had stopped. It got worse as my menopause symptoms eased. Now post menopausal and my symptoms are under control. Mainly use emuaid morning and Eve with occasional Dermovate if I start to feel uncomfortable.

It definitely does not help being post menopausal as the lack of oestrogen makes you dry which makes the itching much worse. You should talk to your GP about hormone replacement. I use Vagifem tablets inserted into the vagina twice a week and this definitely helps.  This is alongside using Dermovate twice a week (everyday when I have bad flare ups) and I use Epaderm ointment for washing.

Hi Mary, I do and use all those things mentioned, I also use emu oils and coconut oil to moisturise. The worst area for me is around my perineum which seems to get dry and inflamed really easy. What strength Vagifem do you use, mine are only 10mg so maybe need something stronger! I'm seeing my Dermatologist in a couple of weeks so hopefully she will have a suggestion.

      Hi Hazel,

my Vagifem strength is also 10 mg.  I do sympathise because I too frequently get really sore in that particular area.  LS is a horrendous condition and nobody has an answer.  I don't feel my GP is particularly sympathetic and my dermatologist seems to imply all they can do is watch it in case it develops into cancerous cells and carry on with the treatment given as there is nothing else!

Could very well be.  After my hysterectomy a lot changed.  There are some scientist who are studying the estrogen balance.  I use hormone replacement.  It makes a diference.

Hi Hazel I believe it is the change in hormone levels and stress related issues can be  one of the reason for acquiring this condition. Also one normally has the predisposition to autoimmune problems of one sort or another- so obvioulsy genes play a part

If you have the anal itch  you may want to use canestan cream as well as the Dermovate (Clobetasol)- make sure you are REALLY clean use - try spraying with a shower head if possible - when I am away from home I use the hairdressing spray atttached to a bath near the loo to make sure no body fluids are left on the skin; barrier cream and all the ususal stuff re smellies tight clothing. Do you have HRT? it could well help as well

if the itch is REALLY awful you could try keeping the buttocks apart with a cotton - or silk-  ironed hankie- the ironing will kill off most germs - after you skin is protected, especially at night

To calm the redness try crushed ice in a plastic bag which is wrapped in a hankerchief!

Good luck and try not to scratch

I've just had a close look and I think it might be a touch of thrush as there is a bit of a rash going on in the crease between my groin and leg and the skin around my perineum is really tender, almost feels blistered so the Canesten is probably a good idea. I'll try the crushed ice as the heat in bed definitely makes things worse.
