I was given a tiny Valium, no IV and it was fine. There were lots of drops administered before the procedure. Easier than having your teeth cleaned.

I am not claustrophobic, and there was difficulty breathing. The first step was putting on booties, then in the OR they attached the heart rate monitors and then unrolled a drape from head to toe with just an opening for the eye that was going to be worked on. My wife was able to video some of it from the observation lounge. I am still waiting to experience the effects of the Valium.

you didnt feel much from the valium?

Did not feel any effects, but maybe that is the idea to help you relax. Certainly did not feel like having had a few strong drinks. But I am not into drugs and have never had Valium before.
The process was very easy, and I would do it any day over teeth cleaning or a colonoscopy.

i had a sedative and it probably helped. by the time the op started i wasnt worried. and i was really nervous before hand. but honestly, its painless.
i was given a nerve block as surgeon felt that younger eyes tend to move more.

There are no nerves in the eyeball. I had surgery on both eyes without anaesthetic - just a little numbing for the incision. It was fascinating as I was conscious and could "see" what was going on. I asked the surgeon to tell me what he was doing.
Then I had 20/20 vision and didn't need recovery time. I meditated and breathed to stay calm.
Good luck

wait...you had to have had numbing drops!!
when I get an eyelash in my eye I can feel it!
wait...this is interesting..did they cover your entire head, and leave just an opening for the eye being operated in?
I'm soooo impressed that you got by with calm.breathing and meditation!! You must be a pro at it!!

Yes, I had a numbing drop for the incision - cut into eyeball. Yes, it is sensitive on the outside. And yes they did put my head in a "cover" that prevents you moving anything. I was nervous before the first one, but found it easy and I hate post anaesthetic blurr. My doctor said he didn't mind doing it that way as he was tired of asking patients to move their head and having them ignore him as they were under anaesthetic. I did read that it was a choice before I did it. I am more afraid of drugs than surgery . No I am not an expert meditator. I fiocused on my toes and wiggled them and breathed!

I agree with being afraid of drugs too!.The cover over your head, was that restrictive? how did u see your toes when your face is covered?

I was feeling my toes, one at a time and wiggling them. Takes my mind off what is going on. The face cover was just to immobilize the eye , it didn't effect breathing. It felt safe to me.

i had a mild sedation by IV. Numbing drops to the eye as well. The procedure took less than 10 minutes. Getting teeth cleaned is worse! i am great full everyday to have cataract free vision.

were you fully awake and aware of everyone in the OP room? does dr talk to you while doing this?

yes i was aware, awake, just relaxed because of the sedative. Also they do tape your head down to keep you still. I heard OR staff talking., as well as the doctor.
i got monifocal lens. Left eye aug 29 , 2019, set for intermediate right eye sept27, 2019. set for distance. i see 20/20, used cheap reader for close vision. There was never an option for premium iols. due to a cornea problem. I am not a young person. Very well aware that artificial lens, joints or what ever is only a replacement, not the same as how we were born. But i am very happy with my end results.
There is nothing more thrilling to see the beautiful sun rise and sunset.

my dr didnt give me the option of monofocal (toric too for my bad astigmatism) to have one set one way and the other the other. I'm highly myopic so he set both to distance
