Does physio help with frozen shoulder?

I've been going to physio for a month now and still don't have a lot of range of motion. Has anyone had any success with pyshio? Any ideas how to stop the pain...thank you

Elaine Yeah,
Pain killers just stop working after a while. Nothing you can do about that. For me heat packs helped a little but what worked best was pressing back and then front of the joint into a the sharp edge of a door frame. Like a wedge driving some space between the bones.
I was going to try TENS and had bought a machine before I cured the shoulder for myself. Someone else mentioned TENS as well and it could be a medium term solution.
I don't think physio is the answer.
When you get through it come back and share what you learned, it is shameful how little info is around about this.
Best of luck
Mike.

It has been my experience that some health professionals exploit our desperation in attempts to find relief. The pain is so horrible and you become so desperate you're easy pickings. When I had my first FS I went to a phsiotherapist who told me it would require 6 treatments. The treatment provided no relief at all. It was such a waste of money. This time, I thought early intervention may be the way to go. Injections and a referral to orthopeadic surgeon with the associated very expensive diagnostic scans, another injection all to no avail. Hundreds of dollars wasted. I have also tried accupuncture and had one treatment but also expensive. Ive settled for some good pain medication but do have serious concerns about the long term affect there may have.

Hi Elaine82959:
Sorry you're hurting...
What will help the most is reading WAY back on this forum to learn from others' decisions and experiences & pain control ideas. I'm at the end of FS now, and this forum was a major blessing the past 18 months. It gave me the tips & courage I needed to choose the treatment path that worked best for me.
Regarding physio, what many here have found is that it may work if it's timed right with the progression of FS: at the very early onset & again during thawing, and only if physio is gentle (not past the end of range into harsh pain). Physio is a waste of money during the most painful part of freezing & when frozen; aggressive physio is also a waste of money, in my opinion, as it keeps the joint aggravated. (I tried that & the best decision ever toward my healing was to flee!)
I have only a few more degrees to gain back, and I still see physio occasionally in conjuction with cortisone shots, and to monitor stretches & retrain my upper back & shoulder muscles. Physio is definitely not able to cure FS. With or without physio though, FS does eventually end...thankfully!
All the best, Liane

Pain is part of the process unfortunately, but there are things you can do. My doc gave me diclofenac gel to apply 4 x a day.
Ice is your friend too.. Hang in there- and know- this takes time and it will get better

Have frozen shoulder for four years and I would say for me physical therapy, I've been consistently to 4 places is a hit and miss,, sorry. Basic stretches on line, massage...expensive helps, cold Lazer consistently helps, more pain helps...or let it lock up, wear tank tops and wait it out. Mine was injury based and locked up in several places not typical frozen shoulder....we all sing let it go like in the movie frozen!

Pushing on it...almost feels systemic and scar tissue like a cat ball of fur
Current treatments that have helped
1. Do not follow drs...like a puppy...listen to your body! I dig in to it combined wit rest-ball roll floor, I lay on the floor often, q lazer bid, thumper from Brookstone bid, curacumin, ice, castor oil and heat- seeing what works and do it bid. Also if you know where the pain is, Do not let someone tell you it is reffered....I could of saved much money and body harm that way!!! Dr's are a resource..period!

Do your own research and as Gale suggested, use the doctors as a rescource ONLY. that's about it. I was told so many conflicting things by these doctors, it's actually pretty frightening how inconsistent the information is about FS in the medical community. I actually started getting a kick of all the wide of variety of different things the doctors told me.
I know of someone who had the "FS surgery" and the doctor snapped her tendon in surgery. Why would they preform surgery on a medical conditon they know nothing about! Scary. (One of my doctors told me that they really had no idea how to treat FS, just offer cortizone shots.)

Not for me, was not helpful in the least. I went to PT/physio for four months, might want a secound opinion from an Orthodedic doctor, I was told after I went through all the pain in PT that there should be no PT if you are still in pain, makes it worse. I am now in my secound year of a FS next month.
What helped my pain was: damp heat; hot baths with about three cups of epsom salts and a wet very hot towel draped over the shoulder . heating pads. A good pain killer perscription, (Norco 10mg) anti-inflamitory pills.
Also, I have started juicing organic greens, greek yoghurt and a few blueberries, daily, accupuncture and massage help. Traditional medicine didn't do a thing for me.
One of the doctors who gave me one of my many cortizone joint injections told me, the medical profession really has no idea what Frozen Shoulder is or how to treat it, which lead me to follow my own intuition and listen to my body. I hope you feel better soon. Try the bath I mentioned when the pain is really bad, it was only thing that helped me when the pain was awful.

Sounds like you might still be in the "freezing" stage....
I didn't start PT until I was already in the "frozen" stage and it didn't help at all. The ortho doc told me to stop going because it needed to "thaw" and I would need PT after that to rebuild strength. I ended up having Manipulation Under Anesthesia a couple of weeks ago and now that the adhesions have been broken up, I can now move my arm where it hasn't moved in the last 6 months. I wish I would've had the MUA done months ago. Now back in intense PT to get my ROM back, in addition to strength training. It's amazing how much muscle loss you will experience with FS. I can now lift my arm over my head, but need the assistance of my other arm to hold it there longer than 5 seconds.
Nothing seemed to help for the pain. I remember wishing I could cut off my arm, just so the pain would stop. Once you get into the "frozen" stage, the pain WILL subside and you will experience discomfort only when you try to extend your arm past the "stuck" part... but the "pain zaps" and restless nights will be a thing of the past once you get there.
