Does sertraline help anxiety?

I've just switched to this med over citalopram. I tried citalopram before and felt it helped make me happier but I still had anxiety. I definitely feel like my problem is anxiety related which turns into depression when left untreated. Does anyone know if sertraline is good for anxiety?

Hello! I just started taking sertraline for sever anxiety and panic attacks a little over a month ago and holy cow has there been a drastic difference.  I couldn't eat, sleep, or function, and I am starting to feel like myself again.  The first week/ week and a half of taking the medicine made my anxiety increase (this is normal) but after it adjust to your body it helps so so much. I actually just got back from the dr and hes increasing my dose to 50mg. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions or concerns feel free to message me.

Hi megan! Thanks for your reply. So good to hear positive feedback about this med for anxiety. I'm having a better day today anxiety wise so feeling more positive. So hard when you're in the grips of anxiety though and in such a negative place! My doctor has started me on 50mg, is that quite high? I'm recently out of work but really wanna get a job within the next month or so, so hoping the sertraline works 😊

Is this your first time on this type of medicine? How long did you suffer with anxiety/panic before going on zoloft? We're you not sleeping before going on this medicine? And now? The side effects for you went away about 1 week and half? Were there other side effects besides heighten anxiety?

You're welcome! 50mg is not high dose at all, but due to my previous weight gain from other medicines my dr wanted me to start the lowest possible and slowly work up to a good dose for me. It absolutely is the worst when anxiety is controlling your life, but hang in there becuase there is absolutely a light at the end of the tunnel!

I was on celexa, fluoxetane, and welbutrin before. The celexa absolutly helped my anxiety a lot, but it made me gain a lotttt of weight which led to depression so I stopped taking all medications about 2 years ago.  After stopping those medications I would take a xanax here and there when needed, but overall I was good. About 2 months ago my panic attacks came back with a vengeance. I was literally crying every day because the anxiety was so bad. I tried calling psychologists and my dr and everyone imaginable because I couldn't take it. The first psychologist I saw suggested Zoloft so my primary put me on 25mg. At this point I had barely eaten or slept in 2 weeks which was added to the panic.  My first week on zoloft was very rough. It made me 10x worse and I still couldn't stomach eating and slept maybe 3 hours a night.  Once I hit 7-10 days it's like I did a complete 180 and my mood was so much better.  I got my appetite back (and then some lol) I could sleep all day if you would let me.  The only other side effect I can think of was mild headaches, but those too have passed. I hope this helps!
