Does this sound like an IBS attack?

Hello All

Just in need of some advice from IBS sufferers about what I believe to be an IBS flare up, but would like some thoughts and views about.

I was coming to the end of my breakfast when I noticed some loud churning / gurgling coming from my lower abdomen, this was then followed by some passing of gas. Within a very short space of time I started to get random, severe lower abdominal pains, almost like someone was pushing a blunt object inside of me, and then the sudden urge to go to the toilet came on. As soon as I got to the toilet I started to pass stools which were very watery and quite smelly. The passing of the stools has eased the lower abdominal pains, but I'm now left feeling extremely tired and groggy, with some nausea.

I've had bouts of this in the past but not so violent, and it doesn't happen that frequently, on average about once every couple of months. This whole episode lasted no more than 5 minutes, from hearing the churning to coming off the toilet. I can guarantee that I won't need the toilet again today, when I do get these bouts they seem to be one offs.

I'd be very grateful for any views and thoughts on this, especially from IBS sufferers, to me it sounds like a classic IBS flare up.

This does sound like IBS. I have been suffering with IBS for a while and I can tell you it is a nasty condition, yes it comes and goes, and can be very debilitating. Every person is different, it is a lot of trial and error to find what works for you. You can try keeping a food diary and cut out your trigger foods, find alternatives. I find drinking peppermint tea helps.  Also stress is not good for your bowels, I know it's not always easy to remain calm! Have you seen your doctor about this? A compassionate doctor will be a great help to you.

    Best wishes

Hi, have you had tests for H pylori and coeliac disease etc?, check out the FODMAP diet online, it my be certain you are eating triggering this reaction, in my case it would onions, grapes and some others would cause havoc.

Thanks for the replies Karen and Martin, I do appreciate them.

Forgot to say that when one of these bouts happen I do feel lightheaded and woozy (? spelling) for quite a while afterwards. Also, there is always a sense of me feeling unwell, which happens almost everyday.

I don't think my triggers are to do with food. I've been ill for just over 3 years now, after a period a heavy mental and physical stress with work. I was also showing signs of upper GI bleeding with dark, tarry bowel movements at the same time. But my problems really took off when I was given Naproxen for back pain while getting the signs of upper GI bleeding. A day after taking them I had severe upper abdominal pain, almost like the top of my stomach was being torn apart. A doctor told me to immediately stop taking them, and prescribed me Omeprazole, since then the majority of my bowel movements have returned to normal (minus these odd IBS type bouts I get) and the upper abdominal pain has stopped, but I seem to get constant bloating, burping, nausea, feeling weak, tired, lightheaded, random abdominal and chest pains, to name my common symptoms.

I've had colonoscopies, endoscopies, numerous blood, urine, stool tests, scans, X-Rays, ultrasounds, and the tests you've mentioned, seen gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, neurologists, dieticians and the only things found were polyps which were removed and found to be benign, haemorrhoids and two separate positive faecal calprotectin tests, for which I'm now under investigation for Crohn's Disease, although the hospital consultant doesn't think this likely due to me not displaying the common symptoms of Crohn's on a more regular basis. I have a small bowel MRI next week to find out. I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME.

I appreciate both of you sharing your thoughts with me, thank you. I'm stating to wonder if I just have constant, chronic IBS, with the Fibro and CFS, to me it seems the likely cause for my symptoms.

It does sound like an IBS flare up.  Have you been diagnosed with IBS?  If so, try Buscopan and nurofen to help with the pain.

      Hi Pippa

      Thanks for the reply.

I was diagnosed with IBS, but now they are looking at IBD. It could well be IBS still, I just never thought a flare up could be so random and leave you feeling so ill. Along with the nausea and random abdominal churning, gurgling and pains, I have a feeling like I'm on a boat, all lightheaded and wobbly. I didn't sleep too well last night, which when mixed with Fibromyalgia and CFS, probably isn't helping my symptoms.

I can't take Buscopan, I react badly to it, but I have been prescribed Mebeverine (Colofac), which does take a bit of the edge off. I'll never touch Nurofen, or any other kind of Ibuprofen or NSAID again, I'm convinced the NSAIDs I was put on were a major contributing factor for the decline in my health. Paracetamol all the way for me. To be honest I can cope with the pain, nausea and abdominal churning, its the "being on a boat" feeling I really don't like.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions though, I do appreciate them.

It is possible to have both IBD and IBS.  IBD symptoms can vary from person to person.  Strangely enough, Mebeverine really upsets my stomach which a lot of people find, but Buscopan gives me no bad reactions and helps my pain.   Paracetemol isn’t strong enough for me and takes too long to work.

Yes, to me this sounds like a classic ibs attack. Mine usually occur after I eat and always start with the lower stabbing pains. I've found that figuring out my trigger foods and staying on a low fodmap diet helps somewhat. But there are other times when the attacks feel very random where I don't feel like I've gone off track on my diet/stress levels. It does leave me feeling exhausted afterwards depending on the severity of the attack.

      Hi Nat

      Thanks for your comments

Sorry you have to go through bouts of this, it's no fun that's for sure. Funnily enough I doesn't seem to be food related with me. There are a lot of foods I can't tolerate, so my diet has become quite restrictive. I eat a lot of the same FODMAP foods, day in day out, yet these flare ups have no pattern to them. I also don't get them that often, perhaps once every couple of months if that, otherwise I have a normal bowel movement every 2 to 3 days. I guess we are all unique which makes our IBS unique as well. I've only just started to feel a bit normal now, it's taken all day though.

Thanks again for getting back to me, I really appreciate it.

      Hi Christine

Sorry to hear you are struggling with similar symptoms to me. I had a camera up there in November, and biopsies were taken. Absolutely nothing was found, apparently my colon looked as healthy as it could be. Even though I wanted everything to come back clear, there was a part of me that wanted something to be found, after 3 years of feeling ill everyday, I'm getting desperate for answers. But if i is IBS then I have to accept there are no answers!

I do hope you get good results from your biopsies, please let us know how you get on. Take care and all the best.

I felt the same.  I desperately wanted to get clear results, but when they came back normal, I wished something would show up.  I got diagnosed with stress related IBS because my symptoms began after non stop stress for six months.   Finding out what was wrong and identifying the cause, gave me the answers I wanted and I was able to get better and free myself from health anxiety.

Stress is very bad for the gut and can lead to conditions like IBS and gastritis.  Hopefully, your doctor can figure it out.   If all your tests are clear, your doctor will diagnose IBS.
