im john i was diagnosed with hypo this past november but i started feeling sick in september of 2011 when i was 17, im 19 now and my life has changed drastically due to this! My hair was falling out at a rapid rate, i was gaining weight even thought i barely eat and had some really bad mood swings! Went to the doc and prescribed me levothyroxine 50mg it has been 9months since im on this medication, my levels are back to normal but i still feel as though nothing has changed, my hair is falling out im almost bald, its really hard to lose weight and according to my mom i have become unbearable! How long does it take to see actual progress with levothyroxine? does your hair grow back at all? will i ever feel better? i just want my life back :'( I had take a year off university because of this and i need to know if anything is gona change! Im sorry for the long note im just fed up and frustrated, thank you for your time i really appreciate it :D

Hi John, Bless you it's a rotton journey isn't ityour hair and your weight should normalise if your Tsh T4 T3 are all within the right range, however everyone seems to achieve balance at different level. The only advice I can give you is to read everything you can on this so that you can look at what will be right for you. It took me at least 6 months for fatigue to lift a bit and for weight to change, but that can only happen if you are adequately replaced with Thyroxine and there are no other hormonal issues. To start with all the forums might blow your mind so I looked at Mary Sholmons About Thyroid site which has information that is helpful so that I understood what I was asking my doctor to do, if I hadn't done this I could have walked out the drs with a prescription for depression alopecia, laxatives you name it when all these can be symptoms of low thyroid. You say you are within normal range but where is normal in that range for you could it be lower or higher you will need to work with your GP to find it. hope it improves for you soon

Hello. Late reply and for this I apologise. My wife has an under active thyroid and she did lose the outer section of her eyebrow, however this did grow back after her levels increased. Her levels are far from right, right now but her eyebrows are in tact still.

    Hi John

I was eventually diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1995 after it had progressed to Myxoedema, I piled on the weight, my hair fell out, my skin was flaking off, my brain was addled and I lost the use of both hands for 7 months. My skin and hair did recover in time as did my hands and my brain is functioning properly  but I was told by my GP that I would never lose the weight!

Having tried in vain for many years to lose weight I came across a book called The Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy (approx £8 from Amazon). The diet is like no other I have ever tried and means eating three main meals and two snacks a day (recipes included in the book). You eat all food groups in a specific way and she explains what works and why it works.

I went from size 24 to size 12 in 5 months and lost 4 stones (56 lbs) in weight. This has changed my life in so many ways. People don't recognise me and have asked me how I did it so I have told them about the book. I have people ringing me to tell me how thrilled they are with the results. The book is fascinating reading as Haylie Pomroy is animal trained and medical trained and speaks such sense. The great thing too is that I have maintained the weight loss even though I am not on the diet now but still follow the principals.

It certainly worked for me so I am pleased to pass this on to you and hope it does for you too. Wishing you well.  Mandy
