Don't know if this is the right forum but need advice please re kidney and ureter!

Hi all, sorry if this is not in the right forum. I don't know where to post it. Ok 😊 when I was 18 (22 years ago) I had a severe kidney infection whilst on holiday in Cornwall and was taken to Plymouth hospital where they did scans on my kidneys and ureters. They found that my right kidney was duplex and my right ureter had loads of kinks in it. They said they would send scans to my Dr but I had no follow up exams when I came home then I moved to a diff place and changed Drs. I had suffered UTIs on and off. 9 years ago I started getting intermittent pain in my right flank and front. I had a scan on kidneys, liver, gallbladder e.t.c which were all normal. Then six months ago I started with pain in the same area which has not gone away! Sometimes can dull to an ache. I've had another scan on kidney and bladder and blood tests all normal. My Dr then put it down to muscular so wants to treat me for that. I mentioned my kidney/ureter and she says she can find any records of my original scans! I've also had two UTIs so far this year. She was quite shocked last week she I insisted on her checking my urine and then found another infection. I have no other symptoms. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this or similar? I've read up on kinked ureters and it says it causes my symptoms'! If I had kidney disease would it show in my bloods if one kidney wasn't functioning and would I have other symptoms? Thank you so much for listening to me waffle! I'm just trying to find some answers and get out of this pain oh and btw the pain seems to go when I'm in bed and doesn't wake me. Thank you x

Pauline, yes, it you had kidney disease with one kidney not functioning, I would have thought your eGFR blood test in particular would show that you had a lower overall filtering rate than normal for your age.  You would probably be unlikely to have other symptoms unless the eGFR was particularly low.

Pauline, you're welcome!  Just ensure that all UTIs are treated immediately to stop infections reaching the kidneys - meanwhile, perhaps referral to a urologist to investigate whether there is any underlying reason for frequent UTIs would be a good idea.

Thank you. The Dr said she will send me to a urologist if I have another infection. I really do believe that they are caused by my kinked ureter which can be rectified by an operation. Don't know why she doesn't send me now but she's still convinced at the moment the pain is muscular. Thanks again.

Hi Pauline, i think kinked ureters would cause the problems you are having.  I have UTI's all the time due to it, in fact not in very good health at moment due to one.  There are several options, they can fit a stent, reattach the utreta.  Maybe its worth being referred direct to a consultant but i would push for it sooner rather than later.  Otherwise they will delay delay delay and it will eventually damage your kidney

Thank you for your reply. How long have you been suffering and have you seen anyone about it? I've just got my physio appointment through so going to see them as at least they can push for me if they don't think its muscular. My pain goes when I'm lying flat too!

Really suffering for about 5 years, although have had kidney problems since forever.  From reading your post i dont think it is muscular and the quicker you see a specialist the better.  I have a stent fitted every 6 months and its no big deal although the first time wasnt great :-(
