Hello I have had yellow smelly discharge from the ear and tinnitus for 6 months now and have gone to the doctors several times.....
1st time said there was nothing wrong (doctor 1)
2nd time said there was nothing wrong (doctor 2)
3rd time went to see a registar and she said there was a infection and thats why i got the tinnitus so they perscribed me otomize spray to use for 1 week.
It still didn't go away and the discharge was getting worse so i went back to see another doctor (doctor 4) and he said I got glue ear and to come back in three months if the problem percisted which it did...
So I went back to see Doctor 2 and he said to stick to 1 doctor for 1 symptom as everyone has a different opinion which really wound me up. He took another look and said I have got glue ear and a profrated ear drum. He also said that they won't transfer me to a ENT specialist because they won't do much and also they don't do Grommits anymore?,
I been perscribed otomize again and this time he said to use for 4-6 weeks 3 times a day ? I don't know what to do anymore he said once the leakage has stopped draining then my ear drum should heal etc and the tinnitus should stop but how long can that take?

I'm assuming you must live in a country with socialized medicine, but you can correct me if I'm wrong. England, perhaps, or Canada? Multiple medical studies, done years ago but with still valid conclusions, show that general doctors misdiagnose ear problems more than 60% of the time! There is a reason that we have ENT specialists, and this is one of the more significant reasons. A big part of the problem is that the GP's do not have a binocular microscope, but instead rely only on an otoscope with a very limited view. It's like comparing the view you get through a keyhole with the view you get by opening the door! Then there are the practical reasons of lack of training and experience in recognizing all of the diseases that can affect the ear canal, the eardrum, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
Bottom line: Get thee to an ENT specialist! Asking nicely may not work in a bureaucratic system. Do everything you can to push for the referral until you get it, to the point of being unpleasant and obnoxious. In medicine the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
