Don't know where to start

So, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about 2 years ago. Diagnosed with graves disease about a year ago. Right now I am taking PTU (propylthiouracil) and I do 350 mg in the morning and 400 mg at night. I just kind of what to know where I am supposed to be in order to be able to get my thyroid removed. I don't know exactly where my levels are at and haven't really talked to my doctor. I'm just so confused by all this thyroid stuff. I need a better understanding! I'm also taking atenolol for my heart rate. I am not able to to do the radioactive iodine because I'm allergic to iodine / shellfish and they don't want to risk anything I guess. So that is out of the question. Ugh! I'm just so frustrated and need people I can talk to about this! Anything will help!

    Hi Katelyn -

I posted a book earlier, but I would suggest doing anything until you absolutely know there is no other option than to have it removed.  I had mine removed with RAI over 20 yrs. ago.  I did okay for awhile (although I gained lots of weight) on Synthroid, but in my 40's things started to change and today, I'm such a mess.  Although I can't confirm much, I believe my Grave's Disease, subsequent removal, and all my symptoms are tied into one.

And to add to the discussion about eye issues.  I rarely get some double vision, but by the time I was diagnosed with Graves all those years ago, my eyes started bulging and they have never been the same since.  Everytime I saw a new doctor since then, even if I'm not seeing them for thyroid issues, they take one look at me and ask if I had Graves Disease.
