Don't overdo things

Had to call the district nurse out tonight, because my wound was weeping a little. (had my staples out Wednesday) Think I overdid the walking, didn't seem like it, was loving it, but very stiff later on.  She said it may of caused it.

So must control how far I walk, she also suggested taking ibruprofen with my codeine and paracetemols, half hour before doing the exercises, she said that would help.

She was pleased with how it's healed, and said it was major invasive surgery and can take a year to heal properly.

So everyone, take care and try not to rush things.

I agree that getting sufficient rest and not overdoing things, thus allowing damaged bone and tissue to heal, is of utmost importance in the early stages of recovery from THR. I, for one, had absolutely no desire or ability to exercise too much, and I still haven't recovered fully. I followed the directions of my orthopedic surgeon to a T, but even so, I have damaged muscles and tendonsIt is apparently quite easy to hurt yourself and slow down recovery if you aren't really careful, and even if you are careful!

It is so easy to overdo things, I suppose we haven't used theose muscles and tendons properly in a long time.

    hi lynn,

how are you this morning?   it is very possible that you overdid it a bit yesterday - you mention that staples were removed last wednesday - was your scar still covered? I asked to keep the dressing on for a couple of days longer because I didn't like the rubbing on this tender spot -

It is easy to walk further and longer now, especially if it feels good - the price you pay is mucle aches and pains - I did the same, and could not move for a whole day - Your body is relearning to walk properly after this major surgery and maybe years of compromised walking - are you using a stick or crutch ?

shorter walks a couple of times a day is the way to go, according to my physical therapist ... take your time, lynn, listen to your body -

    big warm hug

      Hi renee,

Ok today, could even do the hip abduction exercise, but just did it lightly and not pushed it, also been for a smaller walk too. I keep reminding people about overdoing it and forget myself lol.

They put me a new one on after the staples were removed and said I could take it off Monday. It's gives a bit protection. Gone now, took another photo, so got one with the staples in to and would love print outs of my x-rays. (I wanted to see what it looked like)

I'm still using two crutches, don't want to rush that because I don't want to limp, though have just started to use one in the house so I can get myself a cuppa, when there is no one in.

I used Google Maps to plan routes to walk, with the 'directions' feature, you can estimate the walking distances, which helps in not overdoing it.  Even then I have been caught out overdoing it a couple of times.

    Hope you are recovering well.

I might try it and see how far I had gone, it's what I class as a tiny walk normally but obviously not at the moment.

Actually quite pleased now the worst is over.

This probably the wrong thing to say, and I don't want to harm my healing or for anyone else to harm or slow theirs down but hey, isn't it fab that we even want to push the boundaries a little!

I was barely walking before, the pain made me cry and now, even to be able to walk to the end of the road seems like a miracle!

That's hit the nail on the head Kate, walking with no pain.

When I look back I don't know how I coped with work, I guess I just put up with it and when out walking the dog, I had to keep phoning my hubbie to pick me up because it locked and I couldn't walk.

Another thing, I know I'm using two sticks but I'm not limping anymore, after 6yrs of limping it's soooo good.
