Doses of PPIs and H2 antagonists

I've just moved to a new area and the GP is horrified by the doses of lansoprazole and ranitidine I am prescribed. I take 60mg lansoprazole twice a day and 450 mg ranitidine daily in divided doses.
Do others consider this excessive? A gastro-enterologist prescribed them. I've tried taking less but my symptoms are not controlled.

whats the alternative? They always yell at the dosage, but what else can one do when they don't get relief?

That's the problem. I wouldn't wish this amount of reflux on anyone. Well, maybe on my GP, then she can feel it for herself.
What dose are you on, Gilda?

I'm not fat to begin with, so I went on the alkaline diet, watching everything I eat, lost 20 lbs. On Tectra only once a day, but on Motilium. I find the motilium helps. I take 2 before breakfast and 2 before supper. Then I take Zantac befored bed. No s**t food, no pop, no fried stuff, trying to eat very little at one time. Take a probiotic, and metamucil. Try to walk after I eat and don't eat after 7 - or 6 p.m.
Trying to sleep sitting up. Trying not to bend over or bend down. Even an operation is only 50% success and there could be more problems afterwards. If this doesn't work, I will try another type of pill. ppi are the worst for you - it will cause problems down the road, and getting off will be extremely hard, (for you especially) will take you maybe a year of weaning yourself off. I really wanted to try to find natural ways instead of ppi, but caved in. I am not sure it is really helping me.Try to drink lots of water....trying everything and hoping for a remission!

Thanks so much for all that, Gilda. it's given me loads to think about.
What are the problems with PPIs?
I'm having the surgery, but not for several months.

Ppi can deplete magnesium and vitamin b 12
Get a blood test to see
If you research ppi you will see only for short term at the lowest dosage but most people stay on forever and many for years -
Sorry u need surgery - but I hope you have good surgeon as when done properly there has been good success
Keep in touch and best of luck

Hi Eric,
I have been on this awful dose for two years, and they were prescribed for extreme reflux. I am now 61. The side-effects have been a lowered white cell count, low magnesium. I have had a few infections which \i might not have had if my white cells weren't occasionally knocked out. I'm waiting for an operation on the hiatus hernia.
