doxazosin prescribed for hypertension

Doc changed my BP tabs to Doxazosin recently as the amlopodine caused me dreadful muscle pain. However... since I've been on Doxazosin I have developed urinary incontinence. Not happy! It's worse in the morning after I've taken the tablet 2mg. Gets a bit better as the day goes on. Anybody else had this effect?

Hello Sally from another newbie on 2mgs Doxazosin and yes I am having what I would call urgency problems, especially during the night when I find I'm just making it to the bathroom - not too bad during the day.  I'm just wondering whether it will settle down.  I've only been on this pill for 13 days (alongside Losartan Potassium which I've been on for much longer), having been switched from a beta blocker (bisoprolol).  I'm also getting a fast heart beat with palpitations but I've emailed by consultant and he's replied saying that Bisoprolol causes a slow heart rate whereas Doxazosin can cause a fast heart rate, so he's of the opinion that my body will take a couple of weeks to adjust.  Hope he's right as I'm also finding my breathing is laboured when walking.   Interestingly, urine infections are one of the most common listed side effects in the leaflet accompanying the pills along with upper respiratory infections so I'm hoping my "urgency" and "breathing" problems don't progress to those.  As this is about my 8th BP pill, I've come to the conclusion that I'm a lost cause as far as medication is concerned!rolleyes  Good luck with your side effect.

Hello Mrs O. I have stopped taking the Doxazosin this week. I have been on it for about 6 months and the incontinence got to the point on Monday this week where I just couldn't stop myself from wetting. I had started to use the larger incontinence Tenant lady pads but still got caught out. It was absolute misery. I just stopped taking the tablet and on Tuesday I was back to normality. The relief was great. I am taking Losartan which doesn't seem to cause any problems. I have to see the doc in January so will see what she says then, but I am not taking any more Doxazosin. I too was only just making it to the loo in the night, aware that I was leaving a little trail of drips as I dashed across the landing! I've tried amlopodine (muscle and joint pain) Ramipril caused a cough Bendraflumethiazide caused kidney problems so I'm starting to think I can't take anything but Losartan. 😕 I am going to take a chance I know in that my BP will go up again but I'm hoping to lose some weight (even over Christmas 😊) which may help. I hope your problems do get less but if you read about the side effects it also states it is used for men with prostate problems to help their urinary flow! I sometimes think the tablets cause more problems than they cure! I'll be interested to hear if you do get past this problem though. Good luck!

Sally, it looks as though we're pretty much mirroring each other with experiencing side effects from various pills.  Ramipril gave me temporal artery pain and nausea when I was persuaded to try it for the second time.  The first time I became very ill within days with head pain, vomiting and the Ramipril was stopped believing it to be an allergic reaction.  However I was eventually diagnosed with a long-term inflammatory autoimmune illness requiring steroid treatment for 6 years.  It may have been coincidence but I wasn't taking any chances the second time around when Ramipril was prescribed and similar symptoms appeared.  As with your Bendraflumethiazide, I also experienced worsening kidney problems on a similar diuretic, Indapamide.  I've also been on Amlodipine, Diltiazem and other pills, all causing various unwanted side effects such as severe ankle swelling, difficulty walking, muscle pain, urgency and worsening kidney function (eGFR).  To date, Losartan and Bisoprolol have been the only pills that haven't given me unwanted side effects but unfortunately my blood pressure has remained stubbornly high on those (systolic as high as 200) whereas the ones causing the horrid side effects seem to be more successful in lowering the BP.  I also picked up on Doxazosin being prescribed for men with prostate problems to help their urinary flow - how very confusing!  I will try and persevere with the Doxazosin until my next blood test on my kidney function as it has initially appeared to reduce my BP, not to normal but to around 150.  I'm between a rock and a hard place because my sole kidney function is deteriorating due to the high BP.....and much of the medication is also  having a deleterious effect on the kidney.

Good luck on just Losartan working alone for you (my pharmacist has said it is the pill within the least side effects), and also with your proposed weight loss - I wouldn't be surprised if the weight falls off naturally now that you are off Doxazosin if the weight I have put on in just 2 weeks on it is anything to go by!
