DR gave no advice

Hello all, I asked my doc if it was possible for me to try Orlistat, as I have joint prob's that make exercise very difficult and i'm in a spiral of gaining weight/not being able to work it off...he took bloods and said come back and discuss. Couldn't then see him for three weeks so had to see a different GP. I explained my discussion with previous Doc and he just prescribed it. NO advice at all, so I asked about side effects, he said I might get tummy cramps a bit, and nothing about diet. So when I found this forum it sent my head spinning, to much fat .. not enough fat..oily farts.. incontinence..OMG,, I am on my third day and constipated HELP

i think you'll find when reading through the posts on here no one has gotten advice from their GP, they dont seem to know a lot about how it works or the side effects.

constipation is normal with these in the early days, drink lots of water and if you feel constipated take some senakot, if you like bran flakes then having them for breakie can help too

take some time to read through some posts on here, lots of people have posted their experiences so you should pick up some do's and don'ts

    good luck smile

    Welcome to the forum

Sparkles is right very few people get advice from the dr's or nurses. Read as many back forums as you can to get lots of useful advice and keep popping on here helps even if you don't actual making any contributions it helps to look at what others are going through and makes you realise you are not alone.

    Hi Sparkles

not seen you on here for a while. How are you doing? and hope you are well smile Noticed you first posted in June 2009 - Are you still on the tablets and are the prescribed by dr/nurse hope you don't mind me asking but my nurse said I would only bee allowed on them for up to a year as long as I keep losing, I didn't lose anything last time bu think I gained some over Christmas and New Year and lost it so I was back to what I was before Christmas by the time I went for my monthly weigh in. I was disappointed I hadn't lost anything but also thought at least I hadn't gained over the holiday period and was disappointed that the nurse didn't make comments to that effect.

But I must admit the year is fast approaching  (mid April )and I would like to lose alot more so do feel under pressure now.

hi Trying Hard, i'm ok thanks, how are you?

i have been off the tablets since the end of May so i am not much help but my old GP who perscribed orlistat was happy to keep me on them for as long as i was showing progress. i know from seeing other people post is that different GPs/nurses have their own criteria with regards to staying on the tablets, some set a time scale, some set a percentage loss and others are happy as long as your losing

My doc said he would prefer a slow weight loss and that I could have the tablets for anywhere up to 2 years or more.

I'm sure you lose more weight before April, Trying Hard. You deserve to with the amount of help you give to everyone else smile

Thanks for answers, I have read through a lot of the postings and I think I was hoping for a miracle, as find calorie county boring and obsessive, fat counting I think will be a bit easier though I know my diet was pretty healthy just too much of it, I love to cook and feed people. In my naivity I didn,t realise that a pretty controlled diet was needed too. Thats where I fall flat on my oversized backside as I have tried several and go back to that bit of crispy chicken skin or a smidgen of pork crackling...am I doomed.

    Thanks Sally smile

I'm just lucky that I have good will power most of the time which is helped by thinking how miserable I am about how I look when I'm fat and how hard I've worked to get this far.

Roll on lighter warmer evenings so we can get more fresh air and exercise

come on everybody lets keep loosing the lbs/kilos and inches/centremetres
