Hi over the past 3 months I have developed a range of symptoms first it was anemia which I started taking iron tablets for since then I have been having lots of symptoms stomach feels uncomfortably empty in morning burping non stop all day everyday feeling nauseus after eating pains on stomach trapped wind aching legs lightheadedness feeling weak and tired increased bowel movements dry throat and eyes. My doctor prescribed omeprozole which hasn't worked someone suggested I get tested for celiac which I mentioned to my doctor but they said no it wouldn't be celiac. Do these sound like celiac symptoms I need to add as well I am type 1 diabetic and I have an underactive thyroid.

Hi Lynsey sorry to hear about your doctor being so unhelpful, how can he possibly know that you dont have CD if he hasnt tested for it.  One of the most common symptoms is no symptoms at all.

Is it possible for you to see another GP  at the surgery? if not ask the GP how he knows you dont have CD and if he is not willing to give you the test will  he/she responsible for all of the damage that is done to your body by not going gluten free if you are a coeliac and cant find out.

You already have 2 other auto immune diseases which means you are susceptible to others.  Good luck

He seems to think my symptoms don't match up with celiac bur I have read about it and a lot of them do and symptoms differ from person to person. I have an appointment with the other doctor on Friday so will c how that goes

Lynsey, your friend and your "gut" seem to know more than your doctor. You should absolutely be tested for CD - and the full-work up of blood testing, endoscopy and biopsies.

First of all, many people have some deficiency like low iron or vit D. But yours is persisting. You have symptoms with your intestinal issues, etc. and - most suspicious of all - you have AI diseases already... How can they NOT check you for CD??

The iron tablets alone can cause stomach problems...but don't take no for an answer, please! See another dr. if you need to.  It could very well be that you don't have Celiac. But, right now it looks likely and it should be ruled out.

    GL!!

Thank u for replying I am going to another doctor on Friday I think the fact I am anemic as well and they don't know the cause of it basically said it was due to periods but mines aren't very heavy or long lasting so I don't think it's that. I have taken iron tablets before wen I was pregnant and never had any issues which leads me to believe there is more to it . Like u say it may not be celiac but I'd like to know either way

I agree with what the others have said, particularly that the range of symptoms for CD vary over a wide range.  Like you, I had been on medication for anaemia and hypothyroidism for several years with, in my case, only a few minor digestion related problems - very occasional discomfort and bloating mainly.  Other problems, mainly a suspect bowel cancer, resulted in me having a full endoscopy examination.  The colonoscopy confirmed the cancer but when discussing the results and treatments with the surgeon he ended up by saying 'Oh, by the way, the biopsies from your gastroscopy test show that you have CD!'  Since then I have been on a gluten-free diet, I no longer have the minor discomforts although I'm not sure whether this is because of the diet or because the cancer has been dealt with.

The point of this rambling story is that CD can hit without 'typical' symptoms.  Doctors should not discount the symptoms because they do not fit in with their preconceptions about the disease.

And here you have yet another doctor who is determined to make the disease somehow morphe into his or her understanding of the disease. I am fed up with know-it-all doctors. I know that sounds unappreciative. Doctors, you do not have all the information about Celiac Disease. Linsey, find another doctor. It is as demanding as that.

    Hi Lynsey,

Sorry to hear you are having problems and that your doctor is not being as helpful as he should.  I think you are well within your rights to get tested for coeliac disease. If your doctor won't get you tested, you need to change doctors, it's your body after all and why should you suffer because of his attitude?

As as you already have type 1 diabetes and thyroid problems, the chances of you having another auto-immune disease are increased (unfortunately) and it's imperative that you get tested for coeliac disease. Please bear in mind that the blood tests can also throw up a 'false negative' and must not be deterred by that, and still need an endoscopy (with biopsies) to know for sure, as endoscopes are more reliable.  In order to have both the blood test and the endoscopy, you must eat gluten/wheat for at least 6 weeks on a daily basis before the tests, otherwise you still won't get a positive result.

    Good luck.
