Drank every night for 12 years will I be ok ?

I've drank every single night for 12 years I'm 32 now I've always drank until I'm drunk. I've never been able to buy a couple and stop. If I buy 8 pint cans I drink them all. I've always drank 6-8 cans of Stella 5% or a bottle of wine and a few beers every night plus smoking weed with the alchole every single night depending on what I could afford. I've only ever drank in the evenings.

I have worked in a physical job through out the years in the early days it wasn't a problem I would drink a 500ml bottle of water before bed, meet workmates in the cafe at 6.am eat (if I wasn't to hanging) then go to work eat healthy have plenty of water then repeat the next day with somedays times Going in the pub straight after work where I would drink 8-10 pints be in there from 4pm till 11pm. But drinking more over the years.

I lost that job recently for being unreliable because I was sat in bed to drunk or to hanging to go into work and had ran out of excuses.

My dad was a drinker and died of liver failure recently in the summer. I've also got a 1 year old son having just lost my job and my girlfriend fretting to leave me this has to be the time to stop for me.

So I've now been sober 3 weeks . When I stopped drinking I just had really bad headaches light color stools when going to the toilet that have since regained a browner colour .i would also sweat so much at night I would have to change the sheets in the early hours of the morning as they were soaked with sweat. my girlfriend would refuse to sleep in the same bed for first week but on week 3 I feel better than ever I just seem to get pins and needles in my hands.

So I've been to the doctors and was open told them everything had blood tests, she felt around my liver and said it felt normal no swelling. She said my eyes were fine no yellowing and skin is fine but to wait for blood results

how likely do you think it is I have chirrosis or alcoholic hepatitis ? Has any one drank more than this and been fine ? How do you stay away from booze ? I really have to do this and stop my life going off track which lately it has been and alcohol is all to blame .

Kevin get professional help ... Go to a rehab unit they are specialists and anything can be conquered IF you want to turn your life around

    It's all about wanting it...

It seems like you don't like being yourself that's why you drink.. ?

If you are happy with yourself why would you drown yourself like that?

There are underlying issues there which you are trying to drown out ..

You need to come off the drink with maybe medication ..THEN talk about everything that's upset you..

    Talking is freeing ..

Blocking feelings is like being a prisoner in your own home

Who and what has upset you so much that you can't face and deal with ?

To the point you are driven to drink..

Ask yourself that question because your excessive drinking is testament to that..

      You are punishing yourself ..

      You are angry..

Why would you want to hurt yourself like that ?

That's sad ...when there are people who can help you and want to listen?

You have done so well to recognise a problem and not drink. There are medications that can help and you will find links to them on this website eg the Sinclair method. Talk to your doctor about this. And even if your blood results are fine they won't be forever, so keep up the good work.

    Hi Kevin.

I have drank for 8 years although not every night until the last year.

I had my liver tested 9 months ago and it was fine, I had it tested last month and it wasn't.

Not serious but not happy with me. I think having days off is really important to allow the liver to recover as it can recover well.

But also a binge before having the tests can also show it as having a problem altho it might be temporary.

I would say as you have no serious symptoms that it hasn't turned to cirrhosis yet, but I imagine you may well get.high reading after drinking that much for that long.

It can escalate really quickly once it gets bad from what I've read so it's great you have stopped for 3 weeks! .

Well done that's a massive achievement I wish I could do that amount of time.

    How have you found it?

I too also suffer side effects the same when I do manage 3/4 days off it

Thanks for getting back to me it's good to know after 8 years of drinking your test results came back fine. I hope you manage to stop soon as it sounds like you could still recover and have a healthy liver if you stop now. Please try to stop its not to late for you.

As for staying sober I've just taken advise from other that have been in the same boat. Like don't think about getting to the end of the week, month, year take each day at a time.once you get to 6-7 days tell your self you you really wanna undo all that hard work ? I've also just kept busy. Trying to cook meals I looked at taking up swimming and jogging the other day I went to the cinema with my partner some thing I wouldn't do before as there's no drinking there, but I really enjoyed it and looking forward to going again. Even getting tickets to this circus of horrors show at our local theatre. I think the key for me has been to have thing that don't involve alchole to look forward to. But every night I sit down all I think about is having a beer it's very hard but I know if I don't stop I will die young my partner will leave me. I won't see my son. I've already lost my job it's cost me to much already. The one that really made me quit was watching my dad as he was a heavy drinker did it the whole time I knew him and at the end he was in so much pain a skeleton half the man he was. He died a slow and painful death I will never bramble to under those last few days and I don't want that for my son. I'm sure you don't for your family my dad died aged 60

I'm even sat here now as I write this wanting a beer it hasn't got any easier for me yet I'm told it will I will let you know how I get on

    Hi Kevinplus,

I'm a drinker but not every night but lately i have been. Had a few binges this month and since stopped drinking had yellow stools in bathroom. You said yours went back to normal. Do you recall how long?

Dear Alex, great to hear from you. Did you realise that this post is 3 years old? You may not get a reply from Kevin. I stopped drinking 7 years ago after many many years of very heavy drinking but my stools were normal. So sorry, but i cannot guide you. Is it your long term goal to stop drinking completely? Best of luck! Robin

since lockdown started, I started drinking a bottle of wine every night. I have bad anxiety and I think I've been drinking out of fear. I hate being sober it is so scary for me. I've recently got to a point where I'm sometimes drinking 2 bottles a night. I needed to comment and say me too. and thanks for being open about it. hopefully I can stop too. I hate that I drink. but I still do it. 😦

Hello Shannon. Two bottles a night is obviously not good and too much as you know already. Hard to stop during lockdown since our lives have been turned upside down since March last year. What is your aim? One bottle a night and one day no drinking each week? You should try and make a plan, if possible. Wait to hear from you. Regards Robin
