Dressing... Ted stockings!

Hey hippie friends,

I will be 4 weeks post op tomorrow and have been reapplying dressings to my wound as I'm so paranoid about any infection. Do you think it's time to leave it off? The hospital never gave me any guidelines for this. What did you all do and how long did you keep a dressing on for? Wound looks dry. Feels a bit hard and bumpy in places.

Next question is, the TED stockings. How long do you need to keep them on for? Is it 6 weeks? Driving me insane now. They are beginning to irritate my legs. Any advice would be great.

A wee amusing story to share. Had a shower and as I can't bend to reach my legs, got my other half to dry them with the towel. It was so nice for a different texture to be touching my legs and massaging them I was (apparently) almost making groans/sighs of pleasure, hahaha! The simple things in life eh? My fiancé burst out laughing saying if anyone heard this they would totally get the wrong idea! Awkwardd lol! Thought would give you all a wee chuckle xx

Dressings; I did not have one once my staples were out at 2 weeks.

Dry is good, hard and lumpy is normal, need to get some Bio Oil and massage it (gently at first) to break down scar tissue.

TEDs; Kept mine on for 6 weeks as per instructions. They are irritating, andnot the absolute end of the world to take them off as long as you are not prone to getting DVT.

Get your other half to dry and massage your legs - Sounds great, get as much pleasure out of this operation as you can. cheesygrin

    Hey Natalie

As long as your wound is dry stop wearing your dressings now. I stopped about a week ago and have had to baths since.

Teds yep l am afraid its 6 weeks they do drive you insaine l think l have about a week left to wear them. I though you got your op the wed after me l was 15th feb. I though l was 5 weeks yesterday. I had my physio appointment yesterday and she asked to see my wounds and said they were looking great. I have also managed to drive now and asked my physio if this was ok and after my physio she said my legs were strong enough and that it was my choice if l felt l could. I could not do long journeys as its to sore sitting on my bum for a while but my legs are fine. I practiced a few emergancy stops before l went anywhere. But thats me maybe l just heal faster as everyone is diffrent. Don't compair youtself to me as everyone heals diffrent and you could be at a completley diffrent place than me. It might take you a bit longer to be ready for anything like that.

But yeah l get where you are coming from with the ted thet are so annoying and your skin goes all dry underneath.

    Hope you are well

    Hi Worried one,

When staples were removed, I kept dressing on for another couple of days at my request - scars feel hard and lumpy and tight at times - I don't like to touch them (feels weird) but rub them with bio oil anyway ...

    No TED's were required -

How are you getting on otherwise?

    Big warm hug

    Hi

I only had the one dressing on my wound which they put on at hospital. I took it off after 10 days. My stitches were dissolvable. I'm 4 weeks post op and still swollen and scar lumpy. I think this is normal. As for stockings I really feel your pain. I've really thought about taking them off but got told to leave them on for 6 weeks. There really irritating me especially behind my knee, there cutting in and are sore. It's sooooo nice as you said when you take them off to have a shower. Just cannot wait to be fee of them lol.

    Take care

    Xx

Hi Lisa, I ditched the Teds as they were cutting into my legs too but remember the injections stop blood clots too better than the Teds probably, but some have Teds some dont, but everyone has the injections.  Kind regards Ian.

AsIan says, you can ditch the TEDs ... probably.

Everyone has injections, except those (like me) who don't, and they have anticoagulant pills such as Heparin, Warfarin, Rivaroxaban, usuallly for about five weeks.

      Best wishes all

I am the same, dressing off at day 10 on both operations, and I was showering easily, but carefully and was told, by the district nurse not to put anything on the scar, just let it heal by itself, I have had no infections, no problems, just a slow get back to normal routine, of a high protine diet and moderate walking and excersise.

I am doing fine now but even now afer 7 months I am wary and careful not to overdo it.

    Kind regards  Ian.

I don't have the injections or the tablets l had 2 injections while l was in the hospital but nothing after that. I have a reason though l have a low platlet count always have and during my 2 thr ops they had to give me a transfusion of platlets both times. So they did not want to take the risk of thining my blood anymore but am still taking my instructions of wearing my teds for the 6 weeks. I never had any swelling of my feet or ankles so l am ok. Only got another week to go with them 😆 xx

I had my staples taken out nearly two weeks ago and still have a dressing on due to it weeping, going to take it off tomorrow and see what it's like.  I think if it's dry it will be ok.

Know what you mean about the legs lol, I have to strip wash and use a long handled sponge for my legs but get hubby to fill a washing up bowl with some water and a bit of bubble bath in it.  I soak my feet for a while then he washes my feet and legs, then after drying rubs my cream in, feels sooooo good.

Hi Worried Girl, Don't want to scare you but I had a friend whose Doctor said TEDs were unnecessary, injections and pills work just as good. Her leg swelled up to at least 3 times regular size and stayed that way for a long while. She could only wear flip-flops on her feet in October. I had a Doctor that insisted on TEDs and while I had a little foot swelling and they were a pain, I didn't get any of the problems she had.  I had to wear them for 8 weeks so it could be worse.  There are some good websites online that tell you the easiest way to apply and adjust them when they start binding around your knees. Bandages were only removed after the Surgeon gave the okay (2 wks for me). Cream or bio-oil should only be used after any scabs have fallen off. Air lets things progress quicker. I wore skirts with my teds and booties to keep my feet warm as you will be inside mostly. Take care.

Urgh, I hate these TEDS, though not as much as the new ones I bought from the chemist that twist around my legs like boa constrictors cutting off the circulation!

I took my bandage off at the one week mark, it seems to be healing well.

I don't have injections to take, only one aspirin every morning for 6 weeks.

I'm sticking with the TEDS for the whole 4 weeks, because that's what I was told to do. It is nice to get them off even for just a little while, glad you enjoyed the experience 😁
