Dried eye but no eye drops is prescribed. Just clean. Why?

I have one eye which is quite teary. Went to checked with an eye specialist (an Oculoplastics) and was diagnosed with dried eye, but not serious. Due to dryness, hence the eye produce tears to compensate. He do not warrant the use of eye drops, but instead recommend eye wipes to clean twice daily the root of the eye lashes (top and bottom). I asked him whats the benefit of just wiping. He went round to talk quite a long and tedious explanation and by the time he finished I lost track what is he trying to say. Sometimes a good golfer can be a lousy coach.

I need to see him in 6 mths time. I’m just into two weeks of wiping. So still at a very early stage to see any results. Can someone explain in layman’s language whats the benefit of just wiping instead of using tear drop. His an oculoplastic. So I take it that his method must be beneficial. But how does it works?

Tks

I will stick around to read the responses as well because I suffer from the same dry eye problem and have always been advised to use lubricating eye drops.

I was intrigued by your doctor's recommendation.

I'll update this soon .Since I'm only getting adjusted to other activities and work for the quarter .Have had the very same problem for a few weeks now. Due to dryness, the eye produce tears to compensate and do not warrant the use of eye drops, but instead recommend eye wipes to clean twice daily the root of the eye lashes .Have tried almost every 'cure' I've found on the web and never found anything that really helps. Seems like the only thing to do is let it run its course. Horrible, nasty illness

I have suffered from dry eyes for a few years and my doctor recommended lubricating eye drops. You might have a specific condition that doesn't warrant using the drops. Last week I found a natural remedy to relieve the irritation from dry eyes and this might explain why your doctor only wants you to use the wipes. it said to place a warm wet compress (soft cloth) on closed eyes, which will not only relieve the irritation, but soften the eyelid area. After removing the cloth, gently massage the eyelid near the lash line. This is supposed to unclog the areas where your body produces the fluid to naturally wet your eyes. Apparently they can get clogged. In your case, it might be beneficial to use the warm moist compress and gently massage prior to using the wipes. I hope this helps you relieve the discomfort of dry eyes.

FYI: When I use lubricating drops, I have to use the preservative free single use vials. The preservatives irritate my eyes. The vials say they are single use, but my optometrist said that if I am very careful not to allow the tip to touch my eye area or any other object, I can force the little cap back on. Do not use the same vial for more than 24 hours. Since there aren't any preservatives, bacteria will grow. Some days I use only one vial and other days I need to open a 2nd vial.
