drinking while taking acamprosate

I was placed on a course of camprol by my GP I had been off drink for about a month. While I was told not to drink while taking this medication Ibeing an alcoholic did the opposite and started drinking again after about 2/3 weeks of taking it. I found that I was not getting drunk my consumption of alcohol went far higher than ever before it reached a state of stupidity I was having to throw up so that I could get more alcohol into my stomach I could actually feel the drink swilling about inside me, it was a horrible time for me fortunately I managed to get myself into a clinic for a detox after the ten day detox I went back on acamprosate but this time I was determined not to drink again. This time the camprol worked I was taking it for around 12 months not without any cravings I did have some but nothing like they had been on past stopping attempts and it has so far been a success now coming up to start my 8th year of sobriety. Camprol works just don't drink while taking it I tried it for you.

Take care Rob

Hi Rob. Glad to hear you have been so successful.  I have just finished my 4th detox and waiting for my referral for this medication now from a specialist (GP's no longer allowed to prescribe.)   I was reluctant to try them before as read they can have so many bad side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and palpitations. But now really think i should try something.  Did you suffer any adverse effects whilst taking Acamprosate?

    Many thanks

hey, congratulations on what would hopefully be you're 9th year in sobriety. I take my hat off to you. I started these pills two days ago as i went to my docs and just said I cannot do this in my own. help. So i was prescribed these. this is day 2 on them now and i actually (very shockingly) don't feel like i need a drink. I do feel bloody sick though? i'm not expecting a reply as you posted this a long time ago but if you could let me know how long you had to take them until you could cope on you're own, or are the gonna be a lifetime 'replacement'. And you say you drank on them? Did it end well?

Thank you in advance for you're reply if there is one. And again congratulations on 9 years.

Hello and welcome.  I have not used any meds so cannot comment, I tapered down and am still doing.  Although the post was a year ago, there will be someone very qualified on here who will be able to help and they will respond to you soon.

That is good that you don't feel like a drink smile
