Driving ???

I am almost 6 weeks post TRH and desperate to drive . I am not using any sticks and everything is fine so what is the view on this ?

My consultant said I could drive when I was able to do an emergengency stop which I have practised in the stationary car. I feel very confident and able !!😆

I was told the merge you stop practice should be in a moving car, in a deserted car Park!

I saw my consultant dead in 6 weeks he got me to raise my leg and resist him trying to stop me then move my leg to the right ( RTHR) and again resist him he did not apply very much pressure but said as I could resist him I was ok to drive so I drove home from west to east london on tj m25 and m11 the following Tuesday I saw my physio who did exactly tje same tests and said if your not driving already you can. It's about taking it steady only going places you know and avoiding situations that could cause issues ( says the person who used the m25 and m11 straight away) smile

The usual, recommended time before driving is 6 weeks. However, like you - I was 'stick free' early into my recovery....and was driving at just under six weeks.  If your muscles are strong (and you excise them regularly)....I don't think there will be a problem. HOWEVER, it is important to tell your insurance company your plan....otherwise they may render your insurance invalid....  Good luck....and a swift recovery.

Then go for a little drive. I got my partner to drive me to a country lane and then I took over. Once I could do an emergency stop while moving the car was back to being mine smile. I am back to enjoying driving as I used to another step in the right direction.

    Hi Jay,

With my 1st THR I was driving in week 5 - got "clearance" from physical therapist-

I am 29 days post-op from 2nd THR and have a diffferent PT who told me that he is not authorized to clear me for driving and I should wait until I see my surgeon  which is another 4 weeks (yikes!!!) away - it is more about an "what-if" issue and insurance - what if I hit a cat or a tree ... insurance will then find out that I was not cleared to drive after THR ...

when is your follow up appoitnment ?   and then it is a matter of how confident you are - getting in and out of my low seated tiny car was more of a challenge than driving ....

    big hug

    renee
