Drugs and pain killers.

Yesterday saw my RA Doc for the first time and was prescribed 6 Methotrexate pills taken at once for 2 weeks then increased to 8 pills once a week, taken at once, along with 2 Hydroxychloroquine daily.      I decided last night not to give myself my usual 2 Naproxan pain pills to see how I'd feel this morning and I experienced the pain and discomfort that mostly all of you express with this nasty ailment.     My question is, what pain medicine do most of you take while on these powerful drugs,

    Hi David Normally I take

    Prednsolon 5mg one tab after

    breakfast if needed gradually

reducing it to half tab/day or

take one tab alternate day. But

U should take folic acid 5 mg

    followed by mathtrxate next

day for 3 days one tab.

    Hi David,

I have a 25mg injection of Methotrexate once a wk, Roactemra injection once a week, folic acid 5mgs daily, except the day I take Methotrexate and 2 Hydroxychloroquine in the morning. I have tried auite a few biologic drugs but this is my present regime. I take paracetamol or co-dydramol if I get severe pain and swelling and call my rheumatology specialist nurse if I have a particularly bad flare up. I hope you find painkillers that work for you.

    Best wishes, Elspeth xxx

Thanks Elspeth,   I find that Naproxan works for me but my Family Doc is not too willing to prescribe the really powerful ones suggesting stomach problems.   You know my pain is probably not as bad as many of you out there, just that, at 74 and never had any kind of ilness in my entire life I'm probably a bit of a wimp.

    Hi,

Sorry about your diagnosis, welcome to the club.  I also take MTX.  My Dr. started me taking 3 tabs/week, adding 1 additional tab a week until I reached the desired dose.  At the time I was also taking prednisone, which completely(and almost immediately) eliminated my symptoms, so I was not in need of  pain killers at that time.  I tapered off the prednisone when I reached the full dosage. From what I understand, it takes weeks and perhaps months for one to see the full effect of a medication.

    Wishing you the best.

Well done Karen.    I really don't think my pain ( shoulders, knees and hands/wrists ) is as bad as most from what I read on this forum,  but I do need something to be able to work ( auto mechanic ) play guitar every day and golf to remain sane.  My Doc doesn't like to prescribe too many Naproxan and doesn't suggest an alternative pain drug.   I bet he'd take anything in our situation to allow him to sail his yacht.....
