Dry Eyes after Cataract Surgery

Posted , 8 users are following.

I am 4 weeks post op from getting my first eye done. I never suffered from dry eyes before surgery but it is now dry eye. I have just been using Blink artificial tears for mild-moderate dry eyes; the optometrist gave me a sample after my surgery. That doesn't seem to be helping much. Any suggestions on what works well? And do you think it will go away? I also had a limbal relaxing incision (LRI) for astigmatism. Thank you in advance.

Hi Deb - there are several on the market you can try. Personally I like Systane Ultra and just recently started using Systane's preservatives free one. They are little single use paks.

Cataract surgery itself can cause dry eye - even if you've not been affected by it before.

Something else that may help is an Omega 3 supplement or flaxseed oil supplement daily.

Amazing how much dry eye can affect how crisp you see.

Hi Deb - I use Restasis (prescribed) and it helps quite a lot. I also take a vitamin that supports eye health (lutemax, etc.). Eye drops as needed. It's a frustrating situation when it all first starts, but talk to your eye doctor and s/he should be able to find some good solutions for you.

    HI Deb,

I alternate preservative free Systane made by Alcon and Soothe made by Bausch & Lomb. I find Systane is thicker and better at bedtime, while Soothe is not so thick and more soothing at other times. I also take lutein and flax seed oil.

I was having some trouble with one eye lately and my retina specialist told me something new. He said to use a warm compress over the eyes. It helps the glands involved in tear production/secretion. I tried it ( just soaked a washcloth in warm water) and it made an immediate difference.

Overall, the dryness should decrease after the eye is completely healed.

There is also a product that feels like a soft bean bag that you can heat up in a microwave to wear over your eyes for a few minutes a day.
